well that saves a lot of money
Mobile radios in an urban setting is useless. The way the CPD is set up there is multiple receiver sites and overlapping coverage. The Citywide and some north zones can be used with a 5 watt handheld 40 mi NW outside the city

That’s pretty impressive range with a handheld. I’ve wondered over the years how far out of the city they could go to talk back into their system before getting out of range. Several years back, I took one of my Uniden handheld scanners with me on a trip to Milwaukee and I was able to pick up the citywides and zone one, 460.4750, all the way through Kenosha county. This was in the afternoon. I was very impressed that I could still pick up CPD that far north using the stock antenna on my scanner.

Apparently their range drops out around naperville in that direction, and ive also been able to hear CPD and CTA in analog up to the IL-WI state line.
