• To anyone looking to acquire commercial radio programming software:

Please do not make requests for copies of radio programming software which is sold (or was sold) by the manufacturer for any monetary value. All requests will be deleted and a forum infraction issued. Making a request such as this is attempting to engage in software piracy and this forum cannot be involved or associated with this activity. The same goes for any private transaction via Private Message. Even if you attempt to engage in this activity in PM's we will still enforce the forum rules. Your PM's are not private and the administration has the right to read them if there's a hint to criminal activity.

If you are having trouble legally obtaining software please state so. We do not want any hurt feelings when your vague post is mistaken for a free request. It is YOUR responsibility to properly word your request.

To obtain Motorola software see the Sticky in the Motorola forum.

The various other vendors often permit their dealers to sell the software online (i.e., Kenwood). Please use Google or some other search engine to find a dealer that sells the software. Typically each series or individual radio requires its own software package. Often the Kenwood software is less than $100 so don't be a cheapskate; just purchase it.

For M/A Com/Harris/GE, etc: there are two software packages that program all current and past radios. One package is for conventional programming and the other for trunked programming. The trunked package is in upwards of $2,500. The conventional package is more reasonable though is still several hundred dollars. The benefit is you do not need multiple versions for each radio (unlike Motorola).

I have just installed CPS RO5.18 in my new laptop running Windows 8.1. When the program opens I get an error message "Unable to open the Controller". Once you click OK on the error message the CPS closes. So, I went back to my older laptop running Windows 7 Home Premium and the same error message appears when trying to open the CPS. Currently, I have the CPS installed in both laptops and my older laptop running Windows 7 was used to program my radios this summer and early fall.

Is there a problem using the CPS on two computers?

Is there a problem using the CPS on Windows 8.1?

Thanks for any advice

You did not say, but I am guessing that you are using the Commercial Series CPS.

Plug in your programming cable before you fire it up. It does that to me, too.

It started wanting the cable before loading the software around version R05.16 or so. I have .18 but haven't installed it yet. .17 does the same thing.

Plug in the cable and then load the software. Problem solved.

Com Port

Steve,
The programming cable allows the CPS to open. But, under Edit>Preferences>Serial Port there are no Com Ports to pick from. Now looking at Control Panel>Hardware and Sound>Devices and Printers. Prolific USB-to-Serial Comm Port (COM3). The status shown is a driver error, needs trouble shooting. Trouble shooting recommends reinstalling the driver. Apply fix without success as it is searching for driver.

The old computer works fine the Comm Port problem is on the new one.

Update: still having a driver error.

Prolific USB-to-Serial Comm Port (Com3) has a driver problem. Recommending un-install and re-install the driver.

Get the latest Prolific PL-2303 driver set from prolific.com. Install it then plug in your cable and make sure the PC sees the device. Then fire up the CPS and click on Edit ---> Preferences and assign the comm port. Should be OK then.

Prolific USB/Serial chip 'clones'

Steve,
The Prolific 3.2.0.0 is the recommended driver for my issue. It is all working now, just took a little time to research.

Note, Chipsets:
Due to Prolific USB/Serial chip 'clones' found in some USB cables, an older driver may be required in lieu of the one supplied by Windows.
Cables with FTDI or true Prolific chips are compatible with all Windows drivers.

Prolific Drivers:
When in doubt, Prolific 3.2.0.0 (below) is the recommended driver.

Win 7 / 8:
Windows may try to update this driver in the future. If this occurs, turn off automatic updates.

Prolific FTDI Windows Cable Drivers

Thanks for you assistance,
Tim
