For the most part my programming on the 996XT has went well. What I want to do is assign some kind of "quick key" (or something) to a group of 6 or so talk groups I already have downloaded in another system. Do I need to download that all again or is there a way to just maybe copy those groups to another "group" and then assign that a quick key or what is the best way to go about this. I frankly have never tired to do anything like this before and I'm setting a scanner up for my son and he's like a way to just hit a key and hear the town he lives in (fire PD etc). I already have stuff in there. It's Starcom 21, the Madison county simulcast. Thanks.
You cannot, specifically, assign a quick key to a talk group. But, for the half dozen that you are speaking of, put them in a separate group, and assign a quick key to that. That will enable you to toggle that group (with your half dozen TGIDs of interest, on or off by using the quick key. If you wanted to ‘focus’ your listening to only those six channels, then assign a different key to the other talkgroups in that same system and site. That would allow turning those off if so desired.
If you prefer to have the talkgroups of interest active for monitoring, be sure that the system containing the specific group, with the items being discussed, has the correct site (that carries radio traffic for the area in question.
