Hi all. I am flying out to Washington state tomorrow for an inpromptu trip and driving back to the Washington DC area. I will be taking whatever the most direct route is, (I-84 to I-80 Portlant to Salt Lake to Chicago to Pittsburg) as we have to be back by friday morning.

I'm looking forward to taking the pro-97 and using the signalstalker. Was thinking of packing up one of my radio shack mag mounts, or just taking the extendable. Haven't decided yet.

So is there anything I need to know...illegal monitoring, area's to avoid, one route better than another, cool places to stop and stretch my legs, restrictions at the airport?

I was just planning on "carrying" my lugguge instead of "checking" it. But am a bit concerned if it contains the radio, the external speaker, the power adapter...might be too many wires to get passed security. Any experience here?

All input is appreciated.

Well as you go through Portland, It's pretty much all TRS, and quite a few amateur repeaters....

Along I84 there are some really pretty waterfalls and nice scenery along the gorge...I hope you enjoy the best of oregon on your trip...You could stop along the river and perhaps catch a salmon or two, there are plenty in the river around this time...

I took my scanner from STL to LAX on a plane, they never even questioned me. They did ask me If I I had an antenna in my laptop bag, but never asked to see it.
It shouldn't be a problem, but I guess it might vary from airport to airport and even the person behind the x-ray machine.

I don't think they're gonna want to do any more than just look at it. MAYBE have you turn on your scanner.

Just to give you an idea of what the TSA apparently doesn't consider to be a problem, I had the following in my carry-on last month:

1. Pro-96 with a telescoping and 800 mHz antenna
2. Yaesu VX2R with telescoping and rubber antenna
3. Grundig 400PE with wire reel-in antenna
4. Clie TJ37 PDA
5. Chargers for all of the above plus a programming cable with USB adapter and sync cable for the Clie.

Not only didn't this apparently not excite any interest in our public servants, they never even asked me to open my bag. I can't imagine that the whole mess didn't look like a giant bomb making kit on the x-ray.

that's suprising. when i brought my remote broadcast equipment for a radio program i was doing in hawaii, they searched it all. explosive sniffing cotton and all. i also had a cheapo scanner in there too.
