Hello, and thanks again, Hit Factor and Kruger.

I’m thinking of buying Icom’s cloning software for my R6, so I will try fixing this issue when I have some time. (R6: Talk about difficult radios to program manually!)

I’ll try the right-click, left-click suggestion first. If that doesn’t work, I’ll light some candles, say some prayers, and see if I can find and fix the registry.

My apologies for not using the correct terminology (file extensions vs app associations?), but I’m learning a lot about computers as I work with my radios. I worked with computers constantly before I retired, but it was in a high-security environment, and we weren’t allowed to “get under the hood” and fix anything like this ourselves. We had to call our desktop support staffers to correct what others, including my 15-year-old granddaughter, would consider trivial. It’s probably time to sign up for a “computer basics” class . . .

Don’t close this thread yet, please. I’ll probably be back.

Thanks!

Let's go ahead and close this thread.

I tried the left-click, right-click suggestion for the icon, and it didn't work, so I started looking into what it takes to find and edit the computer registry. That little foray has convinced me that I've got a lot to learn before I do something really dumb!

There's no point in taking up anyone's time in this forum by teaching me how to navigate the inner workings of my computer.

Thanks to all!

Oh no, not yet, not the registry.

Search google for how to use 'Choose default apps by file type' learn how to do this, far easier than registry editing.

Depending on your Windows version the steps will be slightly different.

Also Icom America support at 800-253-1498 may help.

Good afternoon, Hit Factor.

I'm looking at the directions I found for how to change file associations in Windows 10.

You're right. It looks much easier than tinkering with the registry. However, I'm not sure what, exactly, I want to change the file association TO. All I know/understand at the moment is that I want to get the file out of Acrobat and back to its original form, whatever that was. I remember the original file was labeled something like "Icom data files.icf," and I doubt that I'm going to find anything like that when I reach that point in the process.

I did call the Icom America tech support folks several days ago, and the gentleman who answered said the issue was cosmetic and wouldn't hinder me from continuing to use the software to program my R30. Okay . . . thanks.

You and kruser have been more than patient with me, and I really appreciate that. I'm going to follow the steps I found online and see where that takes me. Who knows? The original file association may be in there somewhere simply because I downloaded the Icom programming software. We'll see . . .

UPDATE: I found the file extension "icf," and, as expected, the current default app is "Adobe Acrobat Reader DC".

When I clicked on the Acrobat line in the "Choose an app pop-up window," my only other option was to "Look for an app in the Microsoft store". The only app that came up in the Microsoft store was something called "GELDO - NOTES & TASKS," for which there is a "new evolution for this app named PAPERS".

Not being as fearless as my granddaughter, I'm going to hold off on installing PAPERS until I know more about it. I kinda doubt that's what the folks at Icom used when they developed the IC-R30 cloning software, but who knows . . . I certainly don't. I think I'll search for anything that says "Icom" in the Microsoft store and see what comes up.

This whole thing has turned into a personal crusade, but I'm learning a lot!

Dont install papers, dont install anything.

Click on the icf file extension and choose the Icom R30 programming software.

If I was at my computer I could get it word for word for you.

Or

PM your phone number to me, I'll call you tomorrow. It's a day off for me. We'll wrap this up in 26 seconds on the phone.

KC5IGH,

Steps will be:

1. Launch file explorer
2. navigate to folder where your ICF file is stored.
3. Right click on ICF file
4. Click on properties
5. To the right of Opens with: click change
6. Click on words 'more apps' (ignore MS Store)
7. scroll down to 'Look for another app on this PC' and click on it.
8. navigate to c:\program files (x86)\Icom\CS-R30\
9. click on CSR30.exe
10. Click on apply

That should do it.

Thanks, Hit Factor!

I couldn't have fixed this issue without your help!
