GLENWOOD SPRINGS — A driver was arrested early Friday evening after allegedly failing to pull over on Interstate 70 near Glenwood Springs and leading law enforcement on a vehicle pursuit past Parachute.

Colorado State Patrol Capt. Rich Duran said a call came in about a traffic complaint of a 1997 BMW sedan weaving and driving slowly through Glenwood Canyon. A CSP trooper tried to pull over the BMW near the No Name rest area but it didn’t stop and continued driving at speeds of 65 to 75 mph, Duran said.

Parachute police deployed “stop sticks” near Parachute that punctured the BMW’s two front tires, Duran said, but the driver continued driving west about eight miles past Parachute until a CSP trooper forced it off the road in what the CSP calls a tactical vehicle intervention.

Duran said the vehicle was traveling about 40 mph at that time.

“He showed no indication of stopping even after being followed for several miles with lights and sirens and having his two front tires deflated,” Duran said.

He said the tactical vehicle intervention was done to reduce the chances of the driver injuring himself or others.

According to reports over the radio, the driver called 911 during the pursuit, asked why he was being chased and said he wants to run over police officers. The driver was also reportedly shocked with a Taser by a Garfield County deputy while being taken into custody.

Duran said the driver appeared to be intoxicated.

The Garfield County Sheriff’s Office, Rifle police, Parachute police and Silt police all assisted the CSP during the pursuit.
