Currently, they are mostly conventional VHF P25. So, Any P25 capable scanner will work. If it were up to me, and if I lived there, I would buy something cheap with P25 capabilities for now. Don't be surprised when Cullman County migrates to AIRS soon and probably goes encrypted. Can't give you a time line on that, but it's coming.

Yes, I know about the conv p25, but wasn’t aware they would be migrating to AIRS. I believe a year or two ago it was in the talks, but nothing since then. Have you heard anything and would it likely be a simulcast site?

No AIRS on the radar. City PD has gone to SouthernLINC with Harris radios, but run a patch to the VHF P25 for interoperability with all the rest of the agencies still with on VHF radios. Likely a slow migration to SL as money is available and as subscriber radios are replaced. It’s ultimately a better use of money to work from the SL system than to build everything for 7/8, maintain, and replace it every handful of years. Just my opinion.

sadly your right. i hate to say this but this system is going to be the go to system. 1. no maint cost for agencies 2 capable of operating on both broadband and traditional P25 land mobile radio (LMR). 3. Southern Linc’s LTE network serves as the primary layer, with the P25 network and satellite service providing additional layers of redundancy to ensure continuity during critical situations Linc Mission Critical Push-To-Talk (MCPTT), LTE voice, mobile data services and interoperable LMR and LTE solutions.

Press release certainly has some inaccuracies, but ultimately that sums it up. The power up, register, etc time of these units is really the only thing that is a major negative. With legacy radios, you can power on and talk in about 2 seconds. With the harris portable on SouthernLINC, the officer really can't turn the portable radio off safety at all during the shift. Best case 30-40 seconds and more like 1 to 2 minutes from switch on to talk./hear.

it was the same way here in birmingham when the police were using the org southern linc i could not tell you how many times officers were per say in the dark when fighting a suspect and they were being beat down and the battery got knocked off or the radio got shut off or disconnected.
