Not really radio related but I haven't found any info anywhere else.
I've noticed that the towers aren't all staffed every day (especially this time of year) and for only 8 hrs instead of dusk to dawn. Can anybody tell me why?

There is quite a bit on this if you do an internet search of NJDEP/NJFFS. Also search RadioReference with the same title and there are many past threats you'll find regarding the observation towers.

The fire towers were never staffed dusk to dawn. At least here in NJ. Its always been 9-5 or 10-6 depending on the time change. They're all staffed right now until we get some decent rain. Here is a few links for more info:

But that's like having a fire dept & EMS that only works 9 - 5 or 10 - 6.

So volunteer and go sit in a fire tower to fill in the gaps. Most times fires spotted from the towers are during the day time. These folks have been doing this forest fire service for a long time. They know when they need to up in the towers when they don't. I live in the woods and I'm good with the current service. If there's a brush fire somewhere the forestry service is all over it.

I'm thinking about it. If a fire starts after 6pm it's got like 16hrs to get to your house.
