Other frequencies in use

Local Police (East Peoria Police, Peoria Police, Bartonville Police, and Peoria County Sheriff) & IDOT (Illinois Department of Transportation) are hot today. I mean very busy! Might check out Peoria Airport too which I have. Too many channels to list here.

Has been used as well today. Prez is heading to airport now. Suppose to arrive around 1:15 P.M. to head home. The prez. has left the building. Oops, I mean the state.

Hey, you guys are going to love this! I was working on a house today maybe 30 miles north of Springfield, Missouri. 12:30 PM I was just getting done with lunch and had my scanner on when over 121.5 I heard a military aircraft trying to contact a civilian a/c . He was giving its position as near Peoria ( didn't catch which direction) at 4500' squawking 1200 and saying "This is the United States Air Force. You have entered a restricted area. Contact the FAA and exit the airspace. After the second time he repeated the message, another aircraft- probably a commercial pilot, keyed up and says " Shoot him down!" I almost fell over laughing!!
I also heard the military plane on 228.9 (NORAD) saying he had tried four times to contact the a/c and a bit later saying the plane had changed course and was heading toward Springfield (IL).
I have looked at a map and I got this signal from approx. 275 miles away with a Pro-97 hooked up to a cheap R/S magmount antenna on top of my pickup. The signal was not real strong, but things must have been just right.

Did any of you hear this today?

Yup,we didn't hear the other a/c saying shoot him down but we were waiting for it.LOL
They actually did this for 3 aircraft that I know of ....they were simulcasting on 121.5 and 243.000,it made for some fun listening :D
Oh,and we were about 40mi. SW of Springfield,IL ;)

121.50000/243.0000-May not have been related

These frequencies are used in the Chicago, Indianapolis, and Memphis Areas. This might not have been related to the Presidents visit here in Peoria. I did not hear anything locally here.

I apologize in advance if this is something you already know, but 121.5 is the guard/ emergency frequency everywhere for civil aircraft and 243.0 is the military equivalent. A few months ago the President was in my area, and I heard the same type of warnings given to a stray aircraft ,and the message was simulcast on both frequencies.

I used to fly a few years ago, and never thought of monitoring 121.5 while enroute to somewhere. My instructor had told me it was for an emergency. I would usually just tune to the frequency of the nearest airport to get a heads-up if someone might be taking off or landing there. Since I became interested in scanning, I have found it is not uncommon for a commercial aircraft to contact another on the guard frequency to pass along a message such as "Center is trying to contact you on xxx.xx"

However, if you are not in controlled airspace, you certainly do not even have to have your radio on. I flew a 1946 Aeronca Champion with no radio at all around the Springfield , Missouri area for most of my flying hours, and as long as I stayed out of the Class C airspace, it was perfectly legal.

One of the FARs (I don't want to look up exactly which one right now) states that you must familiarize yourself with all information pertaining to your intended flight. This is the FAA's way of saying ignorance is no excuse. If you bust a TFR , other pilots may kid you about it , but they won't have much sympathy.

We surely will have more opportunities for some great scanning related to Presidential visits by the time the next election draws nearer. And somebody will be flying along ; dumb and happy!

Sure! 123.45 is an air-to -air freq along with 122.75. 123.45 is easy to remember (notice that?) and you won't tie up a frequency used for an airport. I've heard some interesting conversations such as two commercial pilots talking about their jobs where one said he liked his new employer but he was down to only 70K a year. (Oh the suffering!! HaHa!)
