I am wondering if anyone knows the status of the Dade County Missouri Sheriff radio system? The have been transmitting on regular FMN however now all I can here on their frequency is digital noise. I've never had that issue before and this is with multiple radio's and scanners. I'm assuming maybe they went digital but I've heard no news of this occurring and I can't find any information at the state or local level either. The only thing I noticed on RR is that they updated their input frequency in December of last year. Just curious if anyone knows something. Thanks.

They've been doing the work to transition to digital for awhile now. I believe it's NXDN, but I don't have confirmation on that. I was already planning to head that way tomorrow to investigate.

Edit: Scratch that... looks like a P25 emission designator on their license.

Do you have a scanner that is capable of receiving digital or ??

Yes I have an sds200 and a whistler w1065 however radio reference has no information that I can find at least about them making a move to digital just the input frequency change in december which shouldn't have an effect on the received frequency. I could just be missing something somewhere though. Thanks for the reply.

Thanks for that information. Now does that mean they moved to MOSWIN or did they just move their modulation from NFM to P25. Plus I would have to find the NAC number as well. Looks like I've got some digging and re-programming to do. Thanks.

I've looked at their license both on RR and FCC website. I know I don't know much about the licensing for EMG/Official Government stuff but it shows their license is only good till March of this year? anyway that is beside the point, I could not find a designator for P25 emissions however It must be true because the noise I am getting on the previous NFM frequency I was listening to them on is definitely Digital as I looked up some audio examples. anyway I just need to figure out how to get them programmed into my digital scanners and will no longer be able to use my amateur radio's to monitor them in the field. I suppose I may have to spring for an SDS-100 at some point. Thanks guys.

I checked google maps using the gps coordinates for all the sites in Dade county and I only saw VHF High Band antennas. Looking at the RR data base it looks like they are using the same frequencies but on P25 conventional. The license show they are licensed for narrow band FM analog and P25. It is possible Dade County can transmit on analog or P25. I suggest you change your SDS200 to search for the NAC on the Dade County frequencies.

You can set the modulation to search on the SDS200 so the scanner will hear both analog and digital. I copied this from Mark’s scanner website from his easier to real SDS200 users manual. You can change the modulation settings by using the menu from the SDS200 keypad. The RR database won’t reflect a change until someone submits the new information. I copied this info from marks scanner website. I would set the SDS200 to All so if an analog only radio keys up you can hear both analog or P25.

Set Audio Type (Conventional/Motorola only) Select All if this channel might contain both digital and analog signals.
If you are sure the channel is analog, set the channel to Analog Only.
All - The scanner determines whether the audio is analog or digital.
Digital Only - The scanner will receive the channel only if it is carrying digital audio.
Digital Code Option (Conventional only)
Search - the scanner searches and displays any digital code received.
Set P25 NAC - allows you to program a NAC code. See Data Naming.
Set DMR Color Code (DMR only) allows you to program a Color Code.
Set NEXEDGE RAN (NXDN only) allows you to program a RAN (Random Access Number).
Set IDAS Area (NXDN IDAS only) allows you to program an IDAS Area (Icom Digital Advanced System) Area.
Note: You can also store a (blinking) code when receiving the frequency in scan mode by pressing E/yes.
Analog Only - The scanner will only receive analog audio.

How does one figure out what emission a license has? I've been wondering that for a while.

If you go to the RR database for Dade County Mo click on the frequency FCC call sign if you want to check the Emission designator. Look at the bottom of the page at the link below.

FCC Callsign WQCH254 (DADE COUNTY EMERGENCY SERVICES)

Each tower/site location is listed and shown on a map. Below the map list the frequency numbers. The first frequency listed is 154.0025, emission designator, 8K30F1W (P25 Phase I C4FM hybridized voice and data applications (most commonly seen on trunked licenses)

There is a chart in RR giving the definition for each designator with the specific emission designator code number like 8K30F1W. I copied the description for 8K30F1W and pasted it behind the designator.

Here is a link to the emission designator definition page here on RR.

Thank you for this information. I'll be reprogramming the scanner in a few days and I'll set things up right to start picking them up again. and I actually might be able to use my Yaesu FT70 to pick them up, I seen an article a while back showing how you can use the c4fm in the Yaesu system fusion radio's to decode P25 if you change a couple settings. I might play with that and see what happens. Again Thanks.
