Any recommendations for a portable scanner to hopefully listen to: Lexington PD/FD, High Point PD/FD, State PD Lexington area. (And or anything else PD/FD in the area)

Zero digital knowledge (if it's still like the good old days, pay RR + download to avoid errors + save time)

Thank you very much for your time (reading and replying)

Make sure you have something that is digital capable and can do Phase II (TDMA) trunking. I believe that Lexington PD and NCSHP operate o. VIPER and High Point has a standalone 800mhz system

Thanks for the advice!

You need to get a uniden Sds100 handheld or Sds 200. Guilford County an Viper in Davison County is Simulcast system they are the only 2 that will work the best on Simulcast system

I'm reading up on the sds100 right now.......looks like a real nice radio. It said something about having its own software, do you know if it's compatible with radioreference to download frequencies?

All law enforcement in Davidson County is encrypted. High Point PD, Archdale PD, and HPU are all encrypted as well. Highway Patrol and WRC are likely the only LE you will hear in the clear down there.

Oh, ok. Wow, I had no idea! (BigLebowski) Thanks.....that kinda stinks for me ......I was all set to drop some Christmas $$ on my old hobby (had many scanners continuously from 1976-2008 back in NY)
Thanks again!

Depending on your location you may be able to hear Randolph, Guilford, and Forsyth County Sheriff. All 3 are mostly in the clear but on 3 different systems.

If you go ahead with the purchase, yes the Sentinel software will allow downloads from RR if you are a Premium Subscriber! Same for ProScan software. You'll find multi comments about the software and its pros and cons!

The main would've been Lexington (where I live) - but thats OUT. I work A LOT in High Point, but that also is OUT, not sure "outside" counties or a tiny bit on Highway Patrol near Bus85 would be enough for me....... Those 3 different systems, can they be entered and scanned (or different meaning you can only scan one of them at a time).....sorry! I'm a digital moron (I know)
Thanks

Don't need a paid RR subscription to load SDS 100 from Uniden Sentinel database which is updated every week

That's correct! The RR database is included in your Uniden purchase and Uniden updates weekly from RadioReference.

At the present time SHP on VIPER is not encrypted, receive it fine on my BCD436HP, as well as Kernersville PD and Winston Salen/Forsyth county trunking system, but that system is already slated for replacement, probably with P25type 2, don’t know what may be encrypted on the new system, anything encrypted will not be monitorable.

Most if not all Fire Depts are in the clear. The only exceptions I am aware of locally are some Fire Marshal talkgroups, Guilford has an encrypted Fire Conference talkgroup, and High Point FD has the capability to use encryption but in practice they do not.
