Decoding railroad location

New to the whole rail scene, but I was watching this camera today:

Delaware, Ohio (with ads)

The Chesterton, Indiana camera is located MP CD 481.2 NS Chicago Line - Dearborn Division. The camera sees approximately 75 trains per day, including Amtrak and freight traffic. This camera is operated by Railstream in partnership with the Riley's Railhouse.

Trying to figure out where the camera is. I'm sure it's old hat to some of you, but what does "MP S25.8" mean:

Well that was easy! I assumed S25.8 meant South 25.8 miles, but from where is it measured?

Everything is done in milepost on the railroad so if there's track work done and the first five trains have a speed restriction over the track work for example The Form d or bulletin order would say don't exceed 15 miles per hour between MP XX and MP XX.

It would start from the beginning of that line or the interlocking that starts at that particular line.

Almost all crossings have the mile post markers on them. Find a crossing and math will tell you where to go to find the camera.

I tried that earlier, prior to asking, but am coming up empty. I'll keep looking. Thanks!

Search for "CP Tweed Railcam " on Google Earth or Google maps.

This is from a 2002 NS Lake Division timetable, so things may have changed since then.

S1.1 is where the Ohio Central RR crosses at station known as "CW Tower".
S13.7 is a universal crossover (meaning trains can cross from 1 to 2 or 2 to 1 going either direction) known as "Powell Road".
S25.9 is another universal crossover known as "MP 26".
S31.2 is the point where the double track goes to single track known as "Troyton".
S45.2 is where the CSX (former CR) tracks cross in Marion.

The "S" is a prefix meaning Sandusky District.

Hopefully, that will help you get your bearings on the line.

Trying to figure out where the camera is. I'm sure it's old hat to some of you, but what does "MP S25.8" mean:

There is a series of atlases that show maps of RR tracks and the locations of mileposts along them.

They are published by SPV, and sold by:

USA Railroad Atlases

www.steam-powered-video.co.uk

Most are $20 to $25.

Each atlas in the series covers a different region of North America.

They are drawn in the mid 2010s, but are still useful today, because RRs don't change their track locations.
Once trackage is built; it's there forever.

i suspect it is likely done the same most places, around where i live there are usually concrete markers, of a large and not hoodlum-portable size (so i have heard...ahem) and painted white with MP## in black letters or just the numbers (something like that). Worst case find a stretch of track you are interested and walk one direction a mile or more and you ought to see something. Yeah not real sophisticated i know.

Except for the lines that get abandoned and ripped up completely or given back to Mother Nature!

It can be as long as you don't run across anyone with a rifle or worse... I live just outside the "emerald triangle" of California and the old NWP runs right through the middle of it. You DO NOT want to be walking alone along that OLD abandoned RoW!!

Heh, that might be a fun walk anyway.

I was going to say something about yeah it is as long as the trains in the area don't go too fast (in my area approx 20mph max) but i think ^ franks concerns sound far more exciting than playing chicken with a speeding train.

Around here, you'll be lucky to see a train a couple times a day, let alone anyone else. lol

a couple of times a day? man sounds like the place is hopping. I'm still not sure if there is more than one reg sched pass per day here. the one that comes thru my area during the morning seems regular, but the one at night seems more scheduled around passing through when i am carefully/slowly (until the horn blasts that is) traversing the "see thru bottom" RR bridge. its like they have a look-out posted, with a radio.

"yeah he's been standing motionless for about 3 or 4 minutes, then he put his ear against the track, and seemed to relax after that.... uh, yeah... he's bout quarter of the way out swatting thru them big spider webs and i can hear him cursing...yep....that's right. let 'er rip boys, make that rabbit run"

more than two trains a day and i would just stick to the highway. where it's safe

Haha, this is a short line near my house, which is also near the end of the line.
