I'm playing with SDR using a TV dongle with some success. Is there any decoding freeware that will work in conjunction with SDR as I intend to get HF SDR from Santa!

Also, are there any decoders that give you any idea what type of signal you are listening to or is that asking too much

I hope this isn't a completely stupid question

Many thanks

The only stupid question is the 1 you didn't ask.. I would suggest using Digital Speech Decoder, it should be able to help you out.

Look into SDR# (say SDRsharp) it is free and has a LOT of capability. Go here:

Downloads | SDR#

About half way down the page you will see:

"Important note for RTL-SDR users"

Following that they give you the address for the installation instructions - print these instructionas and follow them carefully and you will get it installed. The look at the array of available "plug-ins" that you can add. You are gonna love it.

Not a stupid question, but one that needs to be defined more clearly...

'Decoding Freeware' - for what application? If you mean digital decoding on HF, there are a few packages that interface directly (you may need to install a virtual audio device) that are listed in the SDR wiki...

Software Defined Radios - The RadioReference Wiki

See topic 3.3. Notice that the support is rather specific to certain models of SDRs

Thank you

Sorry I posted in a hurry and should have made it clear that I'm already using SDRSharp which I find excellent although a very steep learning curve. In the future, I'm looking to try decoding some of the amateur data transmissions and the advice re software that will "interface" with SDRSharp is very helpful

Many thanks
