More than one of the same type of vehicle will result in adding letters to the number. For Example, a station with 2 ambulances will have XX-7 and XX-7A.
Generally, most companies are using plain talk instead of the unit numbers, For Example, Engine XX or Ladder XX instead of XX-1 or XX-5.
