DETROIT -- Detroit police said a female officer is in critical condition after being hit while driving a motorcycle late Monday afternoon.

The on-duty officer was driving north on Cass Street when she was hit by a mail truck at the intersection of Fort Street.

Witnesses said the officer was lying in the street for several minutes before someone came and put a blanket over her until an ambulance arrived.

She was taken to an area hospital.

The condition of the mail truck driver is unknown.

Police have not released the name of the officer.

The cause of the crash is still under investigation.

UPDATE: A 43-year-old female Detroit police officer is in critical condition after colliding with a mail truck.

The accident happened at Cass and Fort in downtown Detroit.

Investigators say the mail carrier was turning left onto Fort when the crash took place. It does not appear as if anyone ran a red light.

A spokesperson for the United States Postal Service says the mail carrier has more than 20 years of experience. She is shaken up and concerned about the officer's condition.

The officer was on routine patrol in downtown Detroit, according to Detroit Police Chief Ralph Godbee who met with the officer's family members at the hospital.

"She has a long road ahead of her," Godbee told Action News outside the hospital.

Police are trying to track down any surveillance video that may have captured the accident.
