Its true they dont pay taxes. Watch the news, listen to the city say they cant do anything because people dont' pay water bills and taxes there. Every April same old story.
Also they raise water bills of the surrounding cities to pay for their frigging water bills that went unpaid in Detroit.
I agree, alot of city residents CAN'T pay there taxes in the city (the tax & insurance rates are about the highest in the state) But just deciding to 'Don't Pay' taxes is probably not true with most residents. If you even have a tax bill, you probably own your home, and you will lose that home rather quickly-not paying taxes- no matter what community you live in. So I'm sure even City residents aren't dumb enough to just ignore taxes putting there homes in jeapordy if there was anyway to avoid it! In addition 40% of the city's single family homes are renter occupied, not being owned by city residents anyway.
And yes, the water dept does indeed have water bill enforcement issues, not only for residents, but also for big buisness who owe more than 5 million in back water bills (even the State of MI owed more than 250 thousand at one point for the state fair grounds water bill)
The City has major problems, of course but it's just a tad bit harsh to say all residents blatantly don't pay there bills or live in a cesspool of filth and disgust. My father moved our family to Detroit from rural Mich to pursue a fire fighting career (back when residency wasn't a choice) our friends and family thought we had gone mad out of our minds to move 'down there' - but after 10 years of living here, paying taxes & water bills (like most of our neighboors) the city is not as bad as alot of the media & some folks on this forum make it out to be.
