Like the radio BUT, the computer (win 7, 64 bit) will recognize the radio as a device- and assigns the drive letter, then week goes by plug it in and can not detect - 'unknown device " no driver info, another time after waiting it search's for drivers, finds it, then am good to go - doesn't matter if I reboot with its plug in or not , there's no rhyme or reason for this behavior
how to permanently store the driver so I don't havta wait and plug and pray for the driver to work the radio

Sounds like you have a computer problem. Once the computer finds the device driver and loads it then it should be good to go from then on. It might need to re-install the driver if you use a different USB port but it should find the driver on-board and install it right away. Go into "Device Manager" and find out if there is a problem with the port you are using. If you don't know how to do that then take you computer to a service shop and explain the problem to them.

Please don't take the advise of paying someone to look at it.

As I stated in another thread, some of these scanners manufactured by GRE/Whistler have a USB Mass Storage driver (usbstor.sys) issue on some computers. Since my last post, I have confirmed this with Whistler, and while they state that only a small group is affected, I suggest everyone to conduct a search here on RR and see that this is a more common issue than Whistler claims.

Whistler suggestion is to remove the memory card and use a card reader for updates. Of course, this will not work for firmware.

It my case, this problem is happening to the WS1080 I manage/update for my uncle and since I only update it once a month, it is not a big deal for me, but if I had to make changes to it as frequently as my personal Uniden's, it would get old quick.

My suggestion, call Whistler, maybe if enough people call they will fix this issue.
