Not a bad chart, but it's missing something that's likely to catch newcomers by surprise; the Whistler scanners can't trunktrack MOTOTRBO or NXDN. I realize that isn't the main goal of the chart, but details matter.

Trunked Radio Systems
What is a trunked radio system?
A trunked radio system allows a large number of users share a relatively small number of radio frequencies. To allow for multiple agencies to use a trunked radio system, each agency's channels are given a numerical channel number on the system. These channel numbers are referred to as Talkgroups, and are shown in the PC Application as Talkgroup IDs.
Most trunked radio systems have the capability to have thousands of talkgroup IDs available to the system owner. The actual number of talkgroup IDs available for use depends on many factors including the number of frequencies that have been licensed to the system, the number of radios that have been programmed for use on the system, and the type of system.
How does a trunked radio system work?
When a system user presses the Push to Talk button on their radio, the system selects an unused frequency from those assigned to the transmitter site, and directs all of the radios using that talkgroup to that frequency. Each time the Push-To-Talk button is pressed, the system will assign one of the available frequencies to that group. On some systems, this will be a different frequency every time (referred to as Transmission Trunking), on other systems, the same frequency will be used until the conversation has ended, or a timeout occurs (referred to as Message Trunking).
Once a transmission is finished, the radio frequency used for that conversation or transmission is placed back in the available pool of frequencies for the next system user that needs to have a conversation.
What kind of trunked radio systems are supported by my scanner?
Your scanner is capable of monitoring and tracking the following trunked radio systems:
- Motorola 3600 bps trunked radio systems (Analog and Digital Voice)
- Project 25 (P25) trunked radio systems (Digital Voice)
- Project 25 Phase 2 TDMA trunked systems (Digital Voice)
- EDACS Standard (Wide) trunked radio systems (Analog Voice)
- EDACS Narrow trunked radio systems (analog Voice)
- LTR trunked radio systems
- DMR Based trunked and conventional (single frequency) systems.
Note: Your scanner is not capable of decoding all types of digital voice channels. Only DMR, P25 Phase 1, and P25 Phase 2 voice channels are supported at this time.
