    Please do not make requests for copies of radio programming software which is sold (or was sold) by the manufacturer for any monetary value.     The various other vendors often permit their dealers to sell the software online (i.e., Kenwood). Please use Google or some other search engine to find a dealer that sells the software. Typically each series or individual radio requires its own software package. Often the Kenwood software is less than $100 so don't be a cheapskate; just purchase it.

    For M/A Com/Harris/GE, etc: there are two software packages that program all current and past radios. One package is for conventional programming and the other for trunked programming. The trunked package is in upwards of $2,500. The conventional package is more reasonable though is still several hundred dollars. The benefit is you do not need multiple versions for each radio (unlike Motorola).

Yes, i started out with MotoTRBO and then went to Hytera after we got a dealership. They both work well, however the forward error correction on the Hyteras is far better than Moto. In an extremely weak signal the Hytera is better. It has less lost data packets than the Motos. Ive found that -115 to -120 is when the Hyteras start to get lost packets, where on a narrowband anlog signal a -115 is so poor, i would refuse to listen to it. We have several repeaters up and linked over the IP network. Most are UHF. For an example, one site is 180' with 7/8 Andrews, a 6db hustler antenna, and 18db ARR preamp. When we had our Vertex VX-9000 repeaters with .18mv recievers (before the preamp), we could get consistent coverage of 15 miles on portables and 28 miles on mobiles (50W and 5/8 wave on roof), before the noise overcame the narrowband signal, and made it virtually unreadable. When we switched to DMR on MotoTRBO we got 20-23 on portables and 30-35 on mobiles before the lost data packet rate go so high it became digitized. With the Hyteras, we get 25 miles on portables and 35-40 miles on mobiles. This is all on the same site, with same duplexers, antennas, feedline, etc.

This equipment is installed in farm machinery, semis, bucket trucks, construction equipment, a squad cars, while the portables are used around grain dryers, machinery, and in crowds. One advantage i love on the Hyteras, is that if someone calls me and i dont answer, due to it being on my belt and not using a lapel mic (while near a drying fan on a grain bin with ear plugs in), they can alert call me and my radio will vibrate, beep, and show caller id until i respond. They can also ping my radio to see that its on if i dont respond. Another option is to text a message to the display if working in a loud environment (140db+).

To put it simply, if im working in an environment where hearing protection is not necessary, i can hear it on my side. The radio also has the option of having audible tones activated from display, for when an active call is received and ended. They have some great speaker mics that we have outfitted some local police and fire agencies with. They have all given rave reviews. Also, our dealer rep has worked with us on custom accessories thru Pryme. They have outfitted their product lineup with the Hytera plugs on request. So, if your a fireman and want a helmet/mask setup, they can do it. Another thing i have seen a customer do, is while mowing with a cables tractor, they plugged an accessory wire from their speaker mic, into a noise cancelling headset they use. It cancels noise above 85db and their radio traffic they receive is crisp and clear. They simply idle the tractor down a bit and respond when called.

I have some numbers from other sites that we converted over on our system as well as customers sites too, that i can share. They range from 100' grain legs to 500' towers. This is just my experience on the differences of the radios systems. We went from analog wideband, narrowband, ICOM IDAS, Mototrbo DMR, and now Hytera DMR. Sorry to revive an old part of this thread, but what part(s) of NFPA 1221 are applicable to using digital radios? I saw nothing that detailed digital vs analog, and only a few things that needed to be planned for, in trunked systems.
