FRANKFORT, Ky (February 3, 2009/3 a.m. EST) -- Kentucky's Earthquake Awareness Week activities--originally set for February 1-7--have been postponed due to the "New Madrid Ice Quake."
This includes the scheduled Emergency Alert System test pertaining to the statewide Earthquake Safety Drill, which has been cancelled. Instead the following EAS message will be released:
"This is a test of the Emergency Alert System --this is only a test. Due to the recent winter storm that devastated much of Kentucky, the scheduled Earthquake Drill has been cancelled. If you are without power and are using auxiliary heating devices or power generator, please read your owner's manual and follow the safety instructions. It could save your life. At this time, Kentucky has been granted a Presidential Emergency Disaster Declaration. This is for emergency relief and life-saving measures only. Other types of assistance may be available in the near future. Repeat, this has only been a test of the Emergency Alert System. This concludes this test."
