• To anyone looking to acquire commercial radio programming software:

Please do not make requests for copies of radio programming software which is sold (or was sold) by the manufacturer for any monetary value. All requests will be deleted and a forum infraction issued. Making a request such as this is attempting to engage in software piracy and this forum cannot be involved or associated with this activity. The same goes for any private transaction via Private Message. Even if you attempt to engage in this activity in PM's we will still enforce the forum rules. Your PM's are not private and the administration has the right to read them if there's a hint to criminal activity.

If you are having trouble legally obtaining software please state so. We do not want any hurt feelings when your vague post is mistaken for a free request. It is YOUR responsibility to properly word your request.

To obtain Motorola software see the Sticky in the Motorola forum.

The various other vendors often permit their dealers to sell the software online (i.e., Kenwood). Please use Google or some other search engine to find a dealer that sells the software. Typically each series or individual radio requires its own software package. Often the Kenwood software is less than $100 so don't be a cheapskate; just purchase it.

For M/A Com/Harris/GE, etc: there are two software packages that program all current and past radios. One package is for conventional programming and the other for trunked programming. The trunked package is in upwards of $2,500. The conventional package is more reasonable though is still several hundred dollars. The benefit is you do not need multiple versions for each radio (unlike Motorola).

This is a large and very visible forum. We cannot jeopardize the ability to provide the RadioReference services by allowing this activity to occur. Please respect this.

If your talking portable to portable than its gonna be about a 1/2 mile to a mile, maybe a little more but not by much.

If your talking portable to base then perhaps a bit more depending on the base power out and antenna variables.

Your mileage may vary.....

I live in Ocean County as well, and given the terrain and foliage in the area, I have used UHF at about 2 miles max with 2 GP300 UHF radios with whip antennas. On a side note, I've gotten up to 3 1/2 to 4 miles on VHF portable to mobile in the woods of Southern Ocean County.

It's hard to say exactly what distance you get. The antennas you use, battery capacity and power, how you hold the radio, and where you are are all variables. Open area with no obstructions will give you the maximum range, which could be anywhere from 2 miles to 5. Individual results may vary.

wait, that cant be true. If it a 4 watt commerical portable. like vertex or motorola then it should be 2-5 miles on simplex. I live in NYC and I get 3.5 miles to a someone in queens. And i live in the heart of brooklyn. So the least should be 2 miles. i even get people in Manhattan on 4 watts.

That's why xlt601 and I added "Your mileage may vary....." to our responses cause everyone's experience will be a little different depending on variables.

First, that '4 watt portable', if it's one of the 'bubblepack' radios, is probably actually 1.5-2 watts ERP.

Second, once you reach 1-2 watts, power is essentially meaningless for simplex communications.

Antenna height and terrain is everything.

In completely open terrain, with antenna heights (handheld) about 5 feet, say, over seawater, your range MIGHT reach 4-6 miles. In urban areas, you'll be lucky to get 1/2-1 mile. Downtown center, consider yourself lucky to get 1/4 mile.

Before buying radios, you should find out if there are any repeaters in your area, and whether you can get permission to use them if there are. If you can, you need to find out what sort of radio you need to access them. Some do not use the 'common' CTCSS tones, some use multiple tones (different transmit and receive tones), etc. You cannot use a repeater without permission of the owner.

achually its a vertex vx-800, I live in a very congested area in brooklyn yet i'm to to speak to someone in queens who is almost 4 miles away from me on simplex. It does varies, but i believe where ever you are you should get at least 2 miles with a 4/5 watt portable on simplex.

too bad, since most of nyc repeaters are down do to jammers & pirates. espcally the almighty 675 repeater. aka ch 20.
