My friend has an Alinco DJ-580T dual band HT which has not been used in years. I also have a DJ-582T which is very similar. Both of mine (580 and 582) work perfectly fine (I have replaced the original NiCd battery packs with new AA Li Ion battery packs).

Initially, his had no audio whatsoever out of the build-in speaker nor using a speaker mic nor would you even get any beeps from pressing the front buttons. It does transmit and the backlit LED feature functions. The rx audio indicator, however, would indicate noise or a received rx below the freqs. on the display, although you could not hear anything. I took his apart and looked for any obvious damage. I found nothing obvious.

When I put it back together and turned it on, I noticed that I now get very low audio output (rx audio, button beeps, etc.) but it's still too low even with the 2 volume knobs (VHF and UHF) for regular use. The audio output is low when using the built-in speaker or a speaker mic. Not sure what I may have done in taking the unit fully apart to get the audio to 'sort of' re-appear. I know about the beep volume settings and I have that set to high. I would suspect that some components (such as caps) may have dried out since the radio is over 30 years old. I don't know what environment my friend stored it in in all those years. I think he last regularly used the radio back in the 1990s. So, the only issue with his radio is a very low audio level.

Any ideas? I did some research and have found no helpful info about this radio having any known audio level issues. I know the radio is 30+ years old but just seeing if it can be salvaged as a backup. 73

I have DJ-180 with the same issue. I asked an Alinco rep at a hamfest several years ago about it and he said it really wasn't worth trying to repair.

Lots of 90s radios end up in the trash due to crap caps. The Kenwood TS-50S, for example, is chock full of garbage pail SMD caps that piss all over the board, and if not caught in time, will destroy the solder mask right off the board and make it not even worth trying to repair. And people want a kings' ransom for these things.
