I'm looking for a open-source SDR software (with publicly available source code) that can reliably decode unencrypted DMR in simplex/direct mode. Anyone know if such a thing exists?

I don't think SDRTrunk works on conventional repeaters or simplex.

You're correct that DSD+FL is not open source.
I think SDRTrunk is supposed to work with DMR Simplex and Repeaters, but I've not personally used it in that manner since I have almost no discernable DMR in my location. Check with @DSheirer, the author.
OP25 will receive DMR in repeater (BS) mode, but not simplex. The limitation is due to slow lock-time on the FSK4 demodulator.
