Does NC Highway Patrol use vehicle extenders anymore? They are still listed under NC Public Safety. Has anyone heard them lately? Last I heard they were used when the highway patrol was using low band. Not sure if they are interfaced with VIPER and I also assuming no low band VHF is being used anymore for highway patrol either. Thanks

Regards, Richard

Hey Richard.
AFAIK: 800Mhz only. Low Band VHF was removed years ago and I believe the one time plan was to repurpose the highband VHF in P25 for other uses (training & other specialized uses maybe?) but not sure if anything ever panned out with that.

Haven't heard anything. They probably don't even have equipment for their old VHF frequencies anymore
Yes, at least for Troop A and C I know this is true. I have personally verified it. I was wondering about the western part of the state. I did go to Boone for a week and helped out after the flooding but I didn't get a chance to get with any of the Patrol officers or do much monitoring except for leaving my 436 scanner in discovery mode.

Odd, because several times in the last couple of weeks I've heard conversations break squelch on my mobile 6 meter rig; NCSHP channels. Haven't got my list in front of me, yet. I'll dig it up & report back. Yes, was quite surprised.

My understanding from a Viper tech is high band is still available, or at least was as of maybe a year ago. I can't say anything about low band.

Maybe skip signals from another state?

Yeah, I hadn't even thought of that possibility. And one time I was in the PD dispatch in Wells, ME, they were still using lowband, and regaled me with stories of hearing Louisiana, etc. on high propagation days.

6 meters has been having openings lately. I read the low band forum on RR frequently and see lots of reports of low band vhf openings lately.

Good to hear. I'll keep the vhf high band vehicle repeater frequencies in my scanners just in case.

Just a possibility but could someone have bought a lot of the old lowband radios at an auction and are just using them like they are still programmed?

No VHF or LowBand equipment used by SHP anymore. Some troopers may have county radios in their vehicles if its needed but those have also become a thing of the past for the most part. Lowbands were removed circa 2018.

I'm sure some VHF and maybe LB frequencies are still licensed but are not used for normal operations. I haven't known of VRS being used in a very long time.

No they do not use vehicle extenders anymore.

When I worked in the highway patrol radio shop back in the 90's they were used extensively. It was a Tait Convert-a-com with a Tait high band portable. The convert-a-com was wired to the Syntor X-9000 that when the portable was removed from the convert-a-com the radio would go into repeat mode. When the trooper would key up his portable it would repeat back to the convert-a-com then it would transmit back and out through the low band mobile.

Now with Viper being brought a board all of that has gone away. The only communications equipment installed in the highway patrol vehicles now are a Motorola APX-6500 mobile and a Motorola portable vehicle charger for charging the Troopers potable while he/she in the car while on patrol.

Matter of fact I don't even believe the Troopers are issued a charger for their portables to be charged while in the home.

Now the old frequencies that were used for the vehicle extenders are now being used for interoperability use.

Thanks David. I appreciate it. I'll keep the extender frequencies in my scanner in case I run across any interoperability type use pops up

Interesting. I retired last year from SHP and I was the lead programmer for VIPER for 5 years or so. Not once did I program a vehicular repeater or any kind of DVRS other than the one that was in my tahoe. They do have some DVRS units but they are the pelican case kind and are used for major incidents. I don't know what they use them for now anymore, but this is not a common practice for the patrol. Regular troopers do not have repeaters in their cars.
