Like I said in my post that was the early 90's when the patrol vehicles were outfitted with both a low band and high band antenna.

Now all they have is a small 800 Mhz. antenna.

The highway patrol radios now are a combination of Motorola XTL-2500's and APX-6500's. The XTL's are slowly being replaced with the APX's.

The highway patrol carries APX-6000 Model with half keypads. Some troopers are starting to carry Bluetooth handheld mics.

Far cry from the beginning when the only low band radios that were installed in the cars was the Artron mobiles and they were something like 10 channels.

I was reading the new yearbook for the highway the other night and saw at one time the highway patrol was divided into Troops A, B, C, D, E, & F. I guess with changes they decided to add Troops G & H.

I remember the troopers would stop by all the time to have their Tait Convert-a-coms worked on, because with all the vibrations in the car.

The electronic part that caused the thing to go into repeat mode would get out of adjustment and we would have to use needle nose pillars

to re-adjust to part and the trooper would be on his way.

Simple 5 minute fix.

The biggest problem was the Tait batteries for the portables. We couldn't get C & L in Raleigh to order battery analyzer cups for the Tait

batteries, so we had find other ways to recycle the portable batteries.

Those were the good old days when the Troop Radio shops done the repairs and programming of all radios within the Troop.

To my knowledge the troop radio shops are not allowed to program any Viper radios. Form what I have been told if a Viper radio needs to

be reprogrammed for any reason the radio shop has a computer that is connected to technical services unit. They have to program the

radio from Raleigh.
