Why does everyone think pulling his ham license will stop him?

It's like suspending your driver's license. You can still
just hop in any car and drive to your hearts content.

Taking all his gear away and giving it to a local school that could set up their own ham club would solve a number of issues I can think of.

Heck a couple of decades ago, probably three decades or so, an extra class ham operator who was also an ATP certified Airline captain murdered his wife and put her through a tree limb chipper and got caught. So a batch of technical certifications usually cause me to take another look at an individual through a more suspicious lens.. there are too many examples of highly certified people who are just plain weirdos in every sense of the word.

Keep in mind that the license does not make the person. I've know people with PhDs, licenses, certifications, etc, who have done wonderful things with their skills of the profession.

Yet there are those who use those same credentials for evil purposes. Sitting here reading this I can think of nine different cases where a person had a "license", yet did some of the most heinous things to other people.

You can't judge character by a license, certification, or shield.

That would be justice, along with a
court order prohibiting possession
of transmitters.

That's similar to telling a drunk driver they can't possess alcohol, or PE not to make plans for someone. Human nature is such that those banned from their vice will always find a way to sneak around.

In the case of the jammer/moron who was harassing our sheriff office, school buses, and railroad, he had bargained with the court to get rid of all his equipment in exchange for no jail time. On the third time he was caught, the judge had been clued in about the guy's obsession and ability to buy more radios after getting rid of those he had. The judge made it clear, (and cited his profession to defense council), he did have the power to take everything from him for restitution and jail him for 10 years. The thought of jail stopped him.

However,
his nephew then took up the "hobby" for chuckles, using his uncle's equipment. He went after GMRS and jammed repeaters, but when he started jamming a local union steel plant, a couple of guys who worked there found him, and "disabled" him. No trouble since then.

But it does demonstrate that this behavior is an addiction, one based on the ability to inflict pain on a victim and hopefully not get caught.

It is just sad nowaday's all bands suffer from the same thing. From worst to least. CB #1, Flat out idiots, Ham around here have surpassed the grumpy old guy and ask why you on on their channel, but with GMRS coming up, same stuff.

I hope I'm not repeating myself, but I do believe this activity
is a social problem, plain and maybe not so simple.

The mentality where it's OK to break the rules, as long as
you don't get caught, has permeated society.
The odds of getting caught are often slim, and they know it.

The entitled generation. The me-me generation, rather
than caring first for your fellow man, as was pretty much
the norm in our country not terribly long ago.

I never thought I would say it, but I think it would be money well
spent to build many more courts/prisons.
Enforce ALL of the laws on the books, prosecute
to the max, if appropriate. No more stinkin plea deals!

PUT every last habitual lawbreaker away, and let us hard working,
law abiding, tax paying people live our d*mn lives in peace.
They are leeches on society, and have no intention of stopping.

It would be a very very bad time for quite awhile.
Perhaps some of our own relatives and acquaintances
might go away for awhile. This Era would be given a name
in history because of the malaise in society for awhile.

It would really hurt. But eventually people would
get the message, and leave each other be.
Life would become a whole lot better for everyone.

OH, yeah - Dude, Our Coast Guard heroes you messed with???

Dial up the local plumber's frequency and play to your hearts
content. At least no one will get hurt...

I used to blame it on the National Maximum Speed Law, aka 55 mile per hour speed limit, that was enacted in 1974 to reduce gasoline consumption as a result of the Arab oil embargoes in 1973. Supporters of the law hoped that gasoline consumption would fall by 2.2%, but the actual savings were estimated at between 0.5% and 1%. Most people thought the law as a joke and ignored it. The law was modified in the 1980s and finally repealed in 1995.

Then, I learned more about the Volstead Act, aka National Prohibition Act, which became an amendment to the U.S. Constitution in 1919. It was intended to eliminate the consumption alcoholic beverages and fostered many more laws to support the provisions of the amendment. These laws were roundly ignored and turned thousands of Americans into felons. Additionally, it created large crime organizations which supported illegal booze, drugs, gambling, and prostitution. The amendment was repealed in 1933. But, organized crime remained.

Our government has a long history of passing laws which society ignores. We are a nation of scofflaws.

Prohibition does not work. It does tend to make something more "interesting" (I'm going to do because it's now illegal). It continues to amaze me (although I don't know why) that Congress still feels all they have to do is pass a law to prohibit something and it will "solve" the issue (one common direction now is gun control laws). Hey let's just make shooting someone illegal. Yeah that'll do it.

Not to derail the thread, but in my old age I've often found creating one law, causes to more social issues, which require a law .......
