Wow. I'd like to believe these experienced extra class hams would know better, just like the dude in Colorado who was cloning IDs and programming unauthorized trunking subscribers, this A-clown needs his ticket pulled pronto.

You'd think he'd understand RDF also, and how easily USCG can do it using their existing equipment.
Which leads me to a think that the guy either has a habit of not using his brain, or has limited understanding of how anything outside of his ham radio works.

Proof that a ham ticket, on its own, means very little.

Would like to hear more details about this incident. I really hope it's more than a slap on the wrist.
Thanks to the internet, at least his name/call sign will pop up on searches now.

Looking at said individuals FRN, he's only held a ham license since 2021.
And lucky for everyone else, he's also got a GMRS license.

Dispatching a boat out to chase down these distress calls puts lives on the line. It's also a colossal waste of taxpayer dollars. If this guy is found guilty, I hope they throw the book at him.

Amen to that.

When I buggered up my knee, I watched a ton of "Coast Guard Alaska." Pretty much pegged my "admiration meter."

I bet his bride must be real proud of him. lol.
They reminisce over it while smoking meth together.

It would also make sense too since it's just logical to have to help locate an actual distress vessel. I also remember another story like this in I think Michigan but one of the great lake states where a kid did that with a handheld and ended up getting pinpointed, it was shown in a youtube video with audio of his fake distress call exhibited.

I'm gonna go out on a limb and say this is another example of today's "YouTube ham" who don't really get the true basis and purpose of amateur radio.

Those who have respect for the RF spectrum, rules, and the amateur spirit do not act this way, on or off the air.
Really hope his ticket gets pulled, in addition to whatever NAL/fines/forfeiture the ALJ decides on. If homeland security was for real, they'd pop him too.

His QRZ profile shows him a pictures as part of a fire department. I wonder what his agency (assuming he's still on the roster) has to say about his accused offenses?

Idiots on VHF channel 16 is nothing new around here, I hear it on a fairly regular basis every summer. It doesn’t take a Ham license to know right from wrong when it comes to drunks playing with a transmitter. I would wager he started on a CB, illegally amplified it and then eventually ended up where he is. They should make an example out of him, sounds like they might.
I'm five miles from San Diego Bay and I hear the idiots all the time. The one that really burns me are the boating parents that allow their young kids to play with the radio when it's set on Channel 16.

I'd tell you what I said about this particular guy but it's already gotten me in trouble with the snowflakes running Facebook.

Shave his head, make him wear blue, and have someone in a Smokey T. Bear hat yell at him for 8 weeks straight.
If he wants to play with the USCG, he should have to go through the same treatment the rest of us got.

Seriously, though, I do think that permanent revocation of any FCC issued licenses should be on the table. If he made it all the way to Extra and didn't learn anything, it shouldn't be up to anyone else to put up with this guy.

Let him go pull this $#!t on CB.

But, something about innocent until proven guilty. Once proven guilty, all his gear should be taken away and given to a school that can put it to good use teaching the other children how to use a radio.
It would have to be a resurrected R Lee Ermey doing those honors. :)

N8MMB originally licensed as KE8RWR in April 2021. Upgraded to General in November 2021. Granted N8MMB in February 2022. Upgraded to Extra in July 2023.

His QRZ page is a bit disturbing. He's obviously spent a lot of money building his amateur radio station and spent a lot of time making contacts as he holds several QRZ operating awards. Doesn't make sense to me to invest so much into amateur radio and then get caught being an idiot on the marine band.

I know it's not coast guard, but my many year at sea with a 100 ton ticket, when I hear this is the United state warship call my vessel by name and telling me to deviate x amount of degrees I kind of shake in my britches as I can not find them on radar but they know who and were I am. So I do as said.

I recall a recording where some US Navy ship was radioing a lighthouse on some reef and ordering them to change course under authority of the US Navy fleet.

I think you are over estimating his abilities a whole lot with those two words.

Guys like that do not think. It's an involuntary thing that they learn at an early age. The fact that he has a ham ticket means nothing, that's just memorization, no skill. He obviously has minimal critical thinking skills.
Sadly, there are the same imbeciles in business band radio, and public service radio. The latter forget that there are some people who have no problem helping authorities track them down. I've been on two hunts in the last 28 years.

I agree with what you say, but will add these type get a "high" out of being an annoyance. Extension of acting out in the highchair. As such, I don't think the fines are high enough.

I'm sure he had the "O shix" look of doom on his face when the USCGI & DHS agents showed up at his door. Im surprised they didnt seize all of his radio gear. The fines [if he doesnt go to prison, which is a real possibility] are going to be 5 figures. The clown in Idaho that interfered with US Forest service air/ground comms was hit with an NOL of $34,000]. Its also the end of his vol fire dept involvement, felon & reputational risk, prolly all his FCC license as well. Had any members of the USCG crews that responded to his hoax call been injured, they could have personally sued him.

Kind of an old thread but this subject always gets me going. Just because somebody spends a long time getting certified with an extra ham ticket means nothing. Heck a couple of decades ago, probably three decades or so, an extra class ham operator who was also an ATP certified Airline captain murdered his wife and put her through a tree limb chipper and got caught. So a batch of technical certifications usually cause me to take another look at an individual through a more suspicious lens.. there are too many examples of highly certified people who are just plain weirdos in every sense of the word.

I had my share of ham radio weirdos to deal with as a net controller for the Pacific Seafarers Net years ago, even during legitimate distress situations in the middle of the ocean out there. Quite a few phony distress calls also. Like a few have said here, the existing penalties are not adequate but it's nice when they get caught.
