I live in NE AR and have read several newspaper articles - from all over the state - that alot of times these scum are arrested most have scanners & frequencies of the local law agencies.

With that said.....

Does anyone here think AR will try to crack down on scanners in some way?? Or just move all the comms to digital / encrypted.

I have a BC350C in my van and listen all the time......I also have a Pro-62 that I listen to when I'm watchin' the kids play or am outside.....

I think that it's far more probable that the new AWIN system, and the digitized local trunk systems will have certain encrypted talkgroups that investigators, drug taskforces, and the like will be using to avoid detection. Conway police use this type of system. The Fire Department, MEMS, and Faulkner County SO are unencrypted. It's easier, cheaper, and far less controversial than cracking down on every single scanner user. If anything does go through the State Legislature, it probably would be a "use in commission of a crime" type of issue. The reason being that lawmakers realize that most Arkansas scanner listeners use their radios to listen to emergencies in progress, as a hobby, or for news gathering, rather than trying to outrun the law. Plus, the Federal Communications Commission regulates radio communications, not State Legislatures. Any type of legal "crackdown" would be subject to FCC intervention and possible overturn.

When I was a Deputy, 95% of the idiots with scanners to get out of trouble with either had wrong programming or scanning the wrong agency. The majority of folks with scanners hear in NW AR. were on the phone saying, "tell the Officer that the car their looking for just past my house."

I agree. I seriously doubt that anything is done to actually crack down on scanners. As stated before, the new digital systems will be used or adding encryption to keep people with scanners from hearing secure comms.

That's nice to hear... Hopefully the politicians see it that way. Often times, all it takes is some hyped story that's played up by the media. That gets the public that doesn't know any better up in arms, and next thing you know, there's some politicians trying to get something outlawed. One thing I do think the hobby has going for it though, is the fact that the media itself is a huge contributor to the industry. In fact, without them, there probably wouldn't be nearly the equipment available today. Virtually every TV, Radio, and News Paper dispatch room has scanners. So not only are they the number one purchaser of equipment... They will also fight to keep the rights for the public to listen.

agree

I agree with you 100 per cent. but sometimes a person or trucker helps the police when looking for someone or vehicle. so citizens with scanners are
good .
