The news media in Lawrence has been reporting since 2007 that they were being forced to switch to digital by 2018.

The $7 million figure is interesting, does anyone have details of what they are proposing to do? I initially thought that $7 million was too little to move to 800 digital TRS, but in the 2007 LJ World article they estimate a cost of $7-9 million to go digital. Perhaps they can cut costs by already having the infrastructure (towers, links, etc) in place and piggybacking on some other system (Johnson County, KSIC) so they don't have to purchase a controller? If that is what they are doing, I suppose it is possible... but seems kind of cheap considering the price tags of projects in Johnson County, Leavenworth County, Sedgwick County and Shawnee County.

Reviving this old thread...

The RR database had a note added yesterday that reads, "According to MissionCritical magazine, this system is in the process of being transitioned to P25 by the end of the year to link with the State KCIS system."

Anyone know anything about this? I'm not familiar with this magazine but, obviously would be interested in seeing this issue.

EDIT: I tracked down the magazine article.. It is actually 'MissionCritical Communications' magazine. MCCmag.com. If you sign up for a free online subscription then you can read the October issue. I believe it starts on page 26.

The RR database entry isn't exactly correct.. The article actually says, "The Motorola Solutions analog system is being transitioned to Project 25 (P25) by the end of next year, said Elizabeth Phillips, assistant director of the Office of Public Safety at KU."

So it is by the end of NEXT year (2014), not 2013.

New system should be active this fall

According to the minutes of the Douglas County Commission, they are still on track to go live with the new P-25 system this fall. It will still take awhile to migrate users over to the new system after it is accepted.

That's the way it seems... I have heard third-hand from KDOT that the switch will begin by the end of this year.

I'm waiting to hear back from a few other contacts about the switch.

OK bear780ks you're going to have to explain this to me...what does what the type of vehicles they drive have to do with them joining their radio system to the state radio network?

New cars, new radios?

Perhaps they intend to replace all of their vehicles with new ones and add digital gear in each new one as it comes on line. Then they would turn on all the new radios at once. I can't figure out any other possible connection. The new chief seems intent on leaving a visible mark on the department. He's added a number of BIG suvs and a new door decal replacing the unobtrusive LPD seal on the older Crown Vics. He bought an armored car in case of a zombie attack, and they now have added several Ford Tauruses and a couple of unmarked Fusions with the little "beer can" antennas. I'm afraid I don't have any other guesses.
