First: I'm very new to using a scanner and most of the terms.
Second: I just purchased the Radio Shack serial cable and installed Win95. Then tried to download the scanner freqs to the computer. After determining which Com Port to use, I have no idea what the next steps should be. Should I have loaded the software from RS? Do I need to manually go through each bank/channel and put that info into the computer? There are no help files with Win95 nor at Don's home page for this issue. Not that I could understand. :?

BTW: cable is black and the packaging has been trashed, still have
receipt, software is not for P95.

From the Scanner menu, you can select the following:

Download from Scanner
This item starts a download operation, retrieving the scanner’s current settings into Win95. Also available by pressing CTRL+D.

Upload to Scanner
This item starts an upload operation, sending the active Win95 file to the scanner. Also available by pressing CTRL+U.

Sorry Don, I stole and edited this from Win96.

John,

First of all, welcome to the world of scanning!
Second, don't get discouraged by technical stuff that you are having to deal with at first. In time it will become second-nature to you. Win95 is certainly the most popular software for the 95, due to it being both easy to work with and FREE.

Getting the scanner set up is as simple as finding your local area info right here on radioreference.com, and filling in the "boxes" in Win95. What you might want to do is download a pre-made file for your local area. This way, you can take a look at how others set-up their own files, and either "mod" it to work the way you wish, or leave it as is if you are satisfied with it. These files can be found at various places on the web, including several Yahoo! groups. A few URLs for these groups are:

http://groups.yahoo.com/group/p95
and
http://groups.yahoo.com/group/PRO95
and
http://groups.yahoo.com/group/PRO-93_95

In addition, I just bet that someone in your area would probably have a .p95 file and would be more than willing to email it to you.

Good luck!

Good advice.
Might I add, once you upload from your scanner (and/or at some frequency of time), save your .P95 file under another name, so you have a back-up.

I've uploaded when I should have downloaded, and vice-verse, and was real happy I had a somewhat recent back-up file.

Something I seen in your message, your cable you got from radio shack.
Is the cable black or white?
The reason I ask is that the software combo that comes with the black
cable will not work.
The white cable is the one that you would need.
Radio shack will tell you the black cable will work with the Pro 95 but
it won't.
Just a thought....

BTW, the cable you want is the grey one - 20-289 - not the black one - 20-048. It doesn't come with any software. And it doesn't work with all USB->Serial adapters either. (I'm using a Yaesu cable with a stero->mono adaprter, which works with just about any computer, either RS-232 or USB adapter.)

See http://home.hvc.rr.com/bpetrow/, the 3rd paragraph under "Two PRO-92 / PRO-93 / PRO-95 / PRO-2067 / PRO-2053 Programming Cables".

20-289 vs. 20-048

I should have read this thread before I went to RS.

It would be really nice if they would print on the package what scanners the 20-048 is compatible with. Seems kind of stupid in my opinion to not have that info on there. Oh frickin' well.

Sorry to dredge up an old thread.

Just bring it back and swap it for the other cable.

That's what I'm planning on doing tomorrow. It just seems like I could've saved some time by RS having the compatible scanners printed on the package.

It's also my fault for not doing any research on the subject. No big deal.

This link did not work for me. I don't understand why the sub-banks are not numbered. For instance alpha tagging should have 0-0 to 0-19 / 1-0 to 1-19 / 2-0 to 2-19 etc. Also, I would like some info on extended ranges, ie, milair. If I enter a milair freq., it does go to the scanner, but so far I have heard nothing.

You're right, Jerry. It went the way of all links.

I don't understand why the sub-banks are not numbered.
They are in my Pro-95. But not by bank number, just by sub-bank/"channel" number. Sub-bank 0 in bank 1 is inherently 1-0 - there's no way to access it from some other bank.

Also, I would like some info on extended ranges, ie, milair. If I enter a milair freq., it does go to the scanner, but so far I have heard nothing.
1) You may not have an active frequency (or range) programmed in.
2) The sensitivity isn't as good on MilAir as on, say 150-170.
