I have the DPS south frequency, 460.275 District 18, in my scanner but never hear anything. Do they use a different freq or something? I'm in NE Phx and I can pick up the Globe channel so I don't think it a distance issue.

What tone are you using? It's 100.0 Hz.
I believe the transmitter is on South Mtn, but I don't know what the antenna pattern is like. It may be aimed so that it provides the best coverage over the Metro South district.

I've been listening to the UHF side the past 30 minutes, and haven't heard anything. I'm listening to the AZWIN TG now to see if there's any activity on it.
It is possible that they're using Metro East, whether due to maintenance on the Metro South transmitter, dispatcher staffing shortages, or other reasons.

I've been monitoring the D-18 UHF frequency from 2215 to 2335 hours, without hearing the auto identifier for the repeater. Since I can hear District 6 UHF from my location, I'd say the UHF repeater is off or down.

From 2152 to 2330 hours, the 460.275 frequency has been silent. DPS is possibly transferring the District comms to another console after a certain time.

Metro East or District 6 would be my guesses.
Listen between 7-9pm to try to catch a handoff announcement.
It may stay independent Friday and Saturday evenings, depending upon call volumes.

I have an old radio shack scanner and I don't see anything about tones in the manual. I also have a baofeng radio I also use sometimes to listen and have the tone 100.0 put in and not hearing anything on that either

Here in Yuma I thought they were done with UHF, but the occasional unit pops up on uhf for District 4. However the MAJORITY of traffic is on AZWins. Audio is patched to UHF so I hear the console but not the mobiles, maybe because they are using a different mountaintop.

What are your major cross streets? DPS South 460.275 is primarily transmitted from South Mountain. In your earlier post, you mention NE Phoenix. If you have terrain such as Shaw Butte, North Mountain, Piewtewa, etc between you and the transmitter you may not be able to receive from your location.

It's your location and radio. 18 is on the air a lot. When they consolidate channels, the two or more channels stay on their own frequency.
If the 18 transmitter is located on South Mt, it may very well be shadowed at your location and aiming the wrong way, or you may be using an antiquated antenna in addition to your old scanner. ;-)

It's distance. Take drive into Phoenix & you will see.

I listen to Metro-S on AWINS. For some reason it comes in crappy on UHF here. Which is strange if the transmitter is on S Mtn. The only thing I can think of is they are using a Yagi pointed in the opposite direction from me. All the other UHF DPS stuff comes in with no problem including Globe, Prescott & Yuma. They do patch Metro-S & East together at some point over night. I noticed it’s most often done at the 22:00 shift change.

I've noticed that in the early morning South and Central (I believe) are using Central's frequency. This was about a year ago; may have changed since.

Usually, it was East and South that would be patched or multi-selected by the dispatcher when it was quiet, or due to dispatcher staffing.

I've done a lot of DPS listening in the last few months. Seems like the most-common patches for the purpose of using fewer dispatchers puts Metro East and South together, as well as 6 and 4, 8 and 9, 11 and 3 with on rare occasions 2 also. I have heard 12 exactly once, and even caught 1 in there not too long ago, but I missed getting what channel it was on. I've never noticed 5 changing, but what I have noticed is 5 and 14 using different sites because of changes in signal in the middle of calls. I've also heard individual cars talking to each other on the South output frequency (car to car channel?) All this from my QTH near Combs and Schnepf using a BTech 6X2 (I love the sound quality vs. a BC436 and the scan isn't terrible) and a homemade dipole sitting up near the ceiling.

Yes, they will go "direct", or car-to-car, on the output. They can use their portable radio to talk to each other on a scene without interfering with the majority of regular district radio traffic, but can still hear the dispatcher clearing them, and it's a quick switch to the repeater to reply back.
