i don't know where i got off thinking i would be able to listen to a Grundig Yachtboy in my truck while driving to California next week, but in some pre-testing i ran into my old friend: Engine Noise.
i will probably have to restrict my listening to nighttime hours when i'm parked overnight at a truck stop or something, but MAN that engine whine/crackle can be annoying...
Yeah, it's an unfortunate problem. My dad's Ford pickup generates a lot of engine noise as well, making anything below 50 MHz practically unlistenable (except, of course for the inboard AM radio which must be on some good noise filters). I found I could get around it some by stringing the antenna out the back window and into the bed, and generally keeping the radio as far back as possible (easier in an extended cab truck like this one). The other car, a Honda Odyssey, doesn't have NEARLY the engine noise of the truck. But there are still some reception issues.
I don't know what kind of truck you're referring to exactly, but you might be able to get somewhere with some creativity... I have a hard time listening to HF/SW in a moving vehicle, though... too much frequency jumping. AM BCB is a favorite for me on those "long hauls" because the stations have such good range (and it's usually pretty easy to find some interesting stuff like Art Bell/George Noory late at night).
At any rate, good luck.
