The Wiki is your friend:

While decoding
CACH is Common Announcement Channel
TACT is TDMA Access Channel Type
LC is Link Control
EMB is Embedded signalling field
CSBK is Control Signalling Block

Not sure what you mean by the last letter... are you referring to <EOT> ? I presume that would be End Of Transmission.

The mass of miscellaneous letters in the DStar example means one of two things:

1) Your decode is not accurate. This seems unlikely as the received data are being formatted and labeled correctly.

2) Whatever is being sent is not plain text.

It is possible to send data using any mode, including analog AM. DStar is data.

When I try to run DSD+ on D-Star, I get that exact same type of gobbldygook and no audio, even though I've got DSD+ working great on DMR.

Start DSD 1.7 with these parameters to decode d-star.

dsd -i /dev/dsp -o /dev/dsp -fd

keep audio input level LOW.

There is a thread all about the introduction of DSD+. The information you seek is there and does not need to be repeated in this thread.
