I have DSL service through Frontier. Cable is not an option where I live. I have a combination modem/wifi router that Frontier has given to me. I want to add hard wired service and wifi service do another room in my house. That room already has an RJ-11 jack and a DSL filter plugged into it. Can I connect anything to the RJ-11 to add DSL service to another room? Or is running CAT-5 ethernet my best option?

That's probably telco grade 4 conductor wire in the wall. Totally unsuitable. Run your own CAT-5 from the DSL modem to your gear.

I have much of my house hard-wired with CAT-5 that way.

if you absolutely can't do that (which is my recommendation as well), you can always try, I emphasize TRY, to run 10BASE-T over the telco wiring.

10BASE-T will run over twisted pair cat 3 telco wiring if the cables are terminated appropriately, so if your DSL is near where that telco twisted pair terminates in your house - you would just have to replace the jacks with RJ-45 where the RJ-11 jacks are, feed that run from a router, hub...and Bob's your sister's brother. You will not get 100 mb ethernet speed, but you should get 10 mb service if you're lucky. Yes, it's quite slower, but it's already there. If it's a seldom used system by someone with patience, it won't be unreasonable.

The above is true from the perspective of whether or not a LAN signal will travel across residential telco wires if they are repurposed correctly.

BUT, you should avoid using residential telco wiring for hardwired networking purposes because residential telco wiring is almost always installed in a "daisy-chain" configuration, where the telco wire enters the house after the exterior NID box, and then jumps from phone jack to the next phone jack to the next phone jack to the next phone jack and so on. If you interrupt the telco wire and repurpose a segment of it for your hardwired LAN, then you very likely will orphan the more-distant phone jacks from the telco service and any phones farther down the line, in the other rooms for instance, will stop working.

As mentioned earlier in the thread, run your own CAT5+ LAN cable and do not mess with the telco wires. This way you get far better quality wire-connection, higher speed capability, and won't mess-up your telco wiring configuration.

Gotta agree with the recommendations to run new Cat5 wiring. I've been doing that in my house; it's not that hard, and you'll be glad that you did it.

My modem is connected to a Linksys router, which is connected to a 24-port HP ProCurve gigabit switch. Every room in the house will have a minimum of one Ethernet port when the project is done. :cool:
