• To anyone looking to acquire commercial radio programming software:

Please do not make requests for copies of radio programming software which is sold (or was sold) by the manufacturer for any monetary value. All requests will be deleted and a forum infraction issued. Making a request such as this is attempting to engage in software piracy and this forum cannot be involved or associated with this activity. The same goes for any private transaction via Private Message. Even if you attempt to engage in this activity in PM's we will still enforce the forum rules. Your PM's are not private and the administration has the right to read them if there's a hint to criminal activity.

If you are having trouble legally obtaining software please state so. We do not want any hurt feelings when your vague post is mistaken for a free request. It is YOUR responsibility to properly word your request.

To obtain Motorola software see the Sticky in the Motorola forum.

The various other vendors often permit their dealers to sell the software online (i.e., Kenwood). Please use Google or some other search engine to find a dealer that sells the software. Typically each series or individual radio requires its own software package. Often the Kenwood software is less than $100 so don't be a cheapskate; just purchase it.

For M/A Com/Harris/GE, etc: there are two software packages that program all current and past radios. One package is for conventional programming and the other for trunked programming. The trunked package is in upwards of $2,500. The conventional package is more reasonable though is still several hundred dollars. The benefit is you do not need multiple versions for each radio (unlike Motorola).

This is a large and very visible forum. We cannot jeopardize the ability to provide the RadioReference services by allowing this activity to occur. Please respect this.

I guess you could use the status bit to indicate a patch was in place on the talkgroup, and have that patch be linked to a VHF or UHF frequency....but to be honest I'm not sure that would not be a lot of work for the systems guys....73s Mike

[edit] Come to think of it, that's not too far off from what happens when a medevac is patched into our local county system, except they use a previously-allocated talkgroup, and not one that is 'manufactured' on the fly by changing the status bit. Still tho, it's probably possible, tho I suspect it would be a fair amount of programming work to get that done.

Not that this is directly related to the question, but here is what we have locally.

In the county in which I volunteer, we're on VHF high for all public safety comms. The county directly to our east, which we run mutual aid into, is on P-25 800MHz digital. Our county purchased two additional VHF radios and placed them in our neighbor's comm center. This allows the comm supervisors to patch any of our VHF channels into any one of thier TG's, and we're able to communicate on our VHF radios directly across thier P-25 system. Works flawlessly!

I could be wrong, and I'm sure someone will correct me if so, but I think the concept the original poster is asking about is a concept called dynamic regrouping. This allows the system operator to create a new talkgroup and assign users to it. Theoretically, one could put anyone from any fleet on the system - fire, police, ambulance, electric company, airport authority, etc etc etc. The Type II 800 system near me has provisions for this, but it's never been used, and I honestly doubt it would be, because there are "tri-services" talkgroups that all the services I mentioned above can join.

The new Warren, Mi P25 system has four talkgroups set aside to patch to anothers radio, all they have to do is hookup the radio to their system. The talkgroups are available to both Police and Fire abd Dispatch could patch these talkgroups to any of the regular talkgroups if needed and take it all down when done.

You can read about status bits, and what they really mean to us (they're invisible to a Motorola user) here...

Motorola Type 2 Wiki

AFAIK, at least with the systems around me, there are specific tgs that are reserved for Dynamic Regrouping. So they wouldn't be 'temporary' in the sense that they would disappear after the event was complete.

Status bits don't exist on a P96 system, but they can assign talkgroups for patching to another system and only hook up the other radio when needeed, thus the talkgroup would appear to disapear after since no more traffic untill next time it is needed, if it is set up right it is plug and play.
