Don't roast me; I'm brand new to digital. What does a duplex hotspot do? Does it allow me to run two different modes at the same time? What is it for?

EVERY hotspot allows you to run multiple different digital modes (but not transmitting on multiple modes at the same instant). And a duplex hotspot doesn't permit simultaneous RX/TX either. All that a duplex hotspot does is permit operation on different freqs for TX and RX (as a repeater would do). A simplex hotspot allows TX / RX only on the same freq for TX as is used for RX... and vice-versa. No "duplex" (split freq ops)... only simplex.

Ah, okay. Given their very limited range, I can't think of a situation where that would be better than simplex. Do you have any examples of use cases for a duplex hotspot?

It was a while back I researched this. And if my memory serves me correctly a simplex hotspot will not allow you to disconnect from a TG on DMR (I only researched DMR) if someone is jawing away and doesn't break. The one frequency is in use and you cannot transmit to the hotspot until there is a break. Can be annoying. A duplex hotspot allows the user of the hotspot to disconnect from the TG while the other is continuously talking not giving a break. The hot spot has the two frequencies to use therefore allowing a user to transmit/disconnect from the blabbermouth not resting.

On the TGIF site you can use Self Care to manually select a different talk group. The Scan Configuration page also allows you to assign priorities to up to ten talk groups you want to monitor .

The original use of a full-duplex MMDVM board was to enable conversion of an existing FM analog repeater or mobile radio to one (or more) digital modes. Here is but one source to do this, and there are a few YT vids as well -
Repeater Builder STM32-DVM
