Seems like a national tragedy. More of these birds falling out of the sky especially while on runs. I salute the healers of the sky out there. Be safe.

I was just reading an article about this (Wired, Pop Mechanics, Pop Sci?) Apparently, medical helicopters have little to no oversight by the FAA, couple this with the trend for more and more uneeded medvac's and the accident rates aren't going to go down anytime soon.

That seems to have happened in this case from what I have heard, although you could do a running landing with a tail rotor out. It must have caused a catastrophic failure of the entire tail assembly resulting in a pinwheel landing. Very sad indeed. Looking back I think of all of the latest major helicopter crashes that have occurred in the past 5 years have mostly been AS350's.
