• To anyone looking to acquire commercial radio programming software:

Please do not make requests for copies of radio programming software which is sold (or was sold) by the manufacturer for any monetary value. All requests will be deleted and a forum infraction issued. Making a request such as this is attempting to engage in software piracy and this forum cannot be involved or associated with this activity. The same goes for any private transaction via Private Message. Even if you attempt to engage in this activity in PM's we will still enforce the forum rules. Your PM's are not private and the administration has the right to read them if there's a hint to criminal activity.

If you are having trouble legally obtaining software please state so. We do not want any hurt feelings when your vague post is mistaken for a free request. It is YOUR responsibility to properly word your request.

To obtain Motorola software see the Sticky in the Motorola forum.

The various other vendors often permit their dealers to sell the software online (i.e., Kenwood). Please use Google or some other search engine to find a dealer that sells the software. Typically each series or individual radio requires its own software package. Often the Kenwood software is less than $100 so don't be a cheapskate; just purchase it.

For M/A Com/Harris/GE, etc: there are two software packages that program all current and past radios. One package is for conventional programming and the other for trunked programming. The trunked package is in upwards of $2,500. The conventional package is more reasonable though is still several hundred dollars. The benefit is you do not need multiple versions for each radio (unlike Motorola).

This is a large and very visible forum. We cannot jeopardize the ability to provide the RadioReference services by allowing this activity to occur. Please respect this.

I am looking for help in programming EFJ 5100 radios to a P25 system for my Fire Department. I already have the system key and authorization. Any help would be appreciated. This is way different than programming vertex radios.

You will need to determine which 5100 platform radios you have, the firmware will determine which version of the PCC programming software you will need. Be aware that EFJ has ended support on the earlier versions of the 5100 series radios.

The Civil Air Patrol still uses these radios. They had a display of them at Dayton. With a letter of authorization, you might be able to get help from them to do the job for you or at least guide you through the process.

Also, I have the key programmed in along with the channels, the problem is getting the talk group to be selected using the top knob on the radio and not the channel.

If you have authorization then have a radio shop who knows the programming do it. If you have no idea what your doing then you will do more harm than good when trying to program something your not familiar with.

What version of software do you have to program your radio?

Is this on a trunking system or just conventional P25?

If this is a trunking system, I hope it is a phase 1 trunking system.

Depending on the age of the radio, it may or may not be able to do what you want. Look at the name tag on the radio and tell us where the radio was made. If it's not Texas, you probably not going to be able to do what you want to do. There is not enough memory in the radio.

It will also depend on what features are active in your radio. If trunking and P25 are not turned on, your going to have to find some way to turn it on.

You said you have the system key. Is the system key from EF Johnson or Harris, or is it from the trunking system (Motorola)? Your going to need a systems key from Harris to be able to program the 5100 onto the trunking system.

I looked up the out of service message in my EFJ 5100 manual & it means that you need to get radio/comms training from your FD Training or Communications Officer ASAP, or-else the radio will stop working.

Yup, sounds like Radio 101 is needed and or the radio is not programmed correctly to switch (if they have them) sites as he/she travels around

Sometimes you try and help, but when we don't give them the answer they want, we are not helping them..... :D  ;)

Out of Range I've heard of
Out of Service is a new one

Out of range is what I meant. These are new radio types with new software. I have been programming vertex, icom, and motorola for years. I am trying to figure this out to save money for my department and am having trouble getting the trunking in right.

You really need to talk to the System Administrator for that TRS

I'm sure, if they want end users programming they will assist you, otherwise there are plenty of variables on a TRS
that maybe hidden in the software, or system requirements by the Owner

There are a diverse group of folks that are knowledgable and willing to help with problem solving but you need to provide as much info as you can with your original post. None of us are very good mind readers but pretty good radio guys with many years af experience.

Welcome, perhaps you can share some of your knowledge if someone needs help.

You do not know how to properly program this radio. HAVE THE SYSTEM ADMIN do it, cause all your going to do is cause trouble to the system. I have a feeling your not authorized and just trying to program your radio without anyone's approval since your hesitant to have the radio shop do it. If you want to brick your radio, by all means try to program it and when it's discovered and causing issues with the system then too bad. Members here are trying to be helpful but you are over your head on this and there is only so much we can explain.

jwilson thank you very much, I am authorized and have a valid system key. As far as the radio shop there is not one close to my area. Thank you for your advise and comments.
