For those of you who enjoy doing Morse code work and have the Elecraft KX3 transceiver, do you prefer the Elecraft SP3 speaker or do you prefer headphones for your copy work? If headphones, which brand and model?

Headphones every time. I use some nice comfortable Akai open ear ASE-7 phones with both sides wired to a mono jack.

I don't do CW myself but I do a lot of critical listening and headphones generally work best for digging out the fine details. With that out of the way, the Elecraft SP3 speaker is no slouch. It was designed by Dr. Bruce Edgar, a well known audiophile speaker designer. He is also in one of my ham radio clubs.

The main problem is not the speaker itself but the room your'e sitting in - any echo, even very slight, can throw your perception of the very short 'dits' and merge them into the next one.

Slightly OT - way back when the receivers were tubed and no really narrow filters were fitted we used old fashioned diaphragm-type headphones. I came across a pair with a diaphragm that had a harmonica reed rivetted onto it. Careful tuning of the receiver let you tune the CW note to the reed which resonated to your wanted signal but ignored the interfering one close by. Only one ship I was on had this feature and I've never seen once since.

I don't do CW either. However, When I working with any weak signal HF, I always use headphones.
