Does anyone know with certainty what models of Uniden I’m guessing older ones, instead of skipping encrypted conventional channels, still stop on the channel and you can hear static and garble of the encrypted transmission? I know the newer models simply skip over it and display a enc/link I’m doing a paper on encryption and its effects and need to know what models of uniden you can hear garbled data voice thanks

The x36's SDS's P2's all skip encryption
I have no P25 Phase 1 encryption so I cannot test the 785D or 796D
Do not have a BCD996T, BCD996XT or the handheld versions so I can not answer that.
I have no encrypted DMR or NXDN so I cannot say about my BCD160 or BCD260.

The 996tT skips encryption. I also do not have a 996XT to verify, but I would presume it also skips.

Most of the Whistler scanners can be set to ‘hear’ the garbled audio, and some have an option to plays a “busy’ signal (like what you could hear on a telephone) when encrypted transmissions are being received.

Looking back through old threads it appears the 250/296/785/796 mute encryption also. So I'd venture to guess all P25 capable Unidens will mute encrypted P25.

When I first got my 436 back in 2014/2015 enc could be heard for a small amount of time. This was on conventional and Smartzone trunked with phase 1. It was good because if you were not watching the screen, the tiny burst would let you know enc was being used. At that point you had to watch the screen and quickly try to hit avoid which was a PIA.

There are more threads but here are 2 that indicate others could hear enc sounds at one time.

There were also a few threads from those who did logging at the time requesting changes to enc handling be developed to aid them and there were others who opposed it.

These firmware updates had stuff related to enc.

1.11.31 Release Notes (7/7/2017)

  • Modified detection criteria of encryption in Capacity Plus

1.14.00 Release Notes (03/26/2018)

  • Improves P25 Phase 2 Encryption Muting

1.15.00 Release Notes (04/20/2018)

  • Adjust muting for NXDN Encryption
  • Changed operations for encrypted audio, Scan is skipped, Search stays, and Trunked Discovery logs ENCRYPTED

1.17.00 Release Notes (04/27/2018)

  • Modified recording operation for encrypted audio during conventional scanning

Almost 5 years ago you wanted to buy, now your doing a paper?

796d will hold on an encrypted transmission

My first ever digital (might be the first digital ever made), the Uniden BC296D will not mute the encrypted hash. Those scanners need the separate BCi96D card for P25 phase 1 decode however.

Actually, I think it was the BC250D that was the first ever digital. I remember reading about that and the 296 and figured out I needed the 296 for my area. Both are almost identical so both would more than likely hear the encrypted hash.

Wrong. And I can prove it if you want. I own a 296.

What we need to find is when did Uniden START muting the encryption hash sound? Then you just go back from that date forward and will know what scanners do not.

BCT15, BCT15X, BC250D, BC296D, BR330T, BC346XT, BC346XTC, BCD325P2, BCD396T, BCD396XT, BCD436HP, BCD536HP, BC780XLT, BC785D, BC796D, BCD996T, BCD996XT, BCD996P2, SDS100, SDS200, SDS100E, SDS200E, UBCD3600XLT, & USDS100

BCT15: Analog only.

BCT15X: Analog only.

BC250D: Like the 296, will most likely not mute on encrypted audio.

BC296D: Will not mute encrypted audio.

BR330T: Analog only.

BC346XT: Analog only.

BC346XTC: Same as the XT with minor differences. Analog only.

BCD325P2: Will mute encrypted audio.

BCD396T: I had owned this scanner and I'm sure it too muted encrypted audio.

BCD396XT: Will mute encrypted audio.

BCD436HP: Will mute encrypted audio. Easier to Read BCD436/536HP Digital Scanner Manual

BCD536HP: Same as above.

BC780XLT: Analog only.

BC785D: Like the 296D and 250D, will most likely not mute on encrypted audio.

BC796D: Will not mute encrypted audio.

BCD996T: Scanner that mutes encrypted audio

BCD996XT: Will more than likely mute encrypted audio.

BCD996P2: Will mute encrypted audio.

SDS100, SDS200, SDS100E, SDS200E, UBCD3600XLT, & USDS100: Will more than likely mute encrypted audio.

Edit-

And now I see you mention conventional. I think for the digital capable scanners that would be true for conventional as well.

It would be nice if future FW releases had the encrypted auto mute and skip scanning as an option.. Being able to scan the TG without the automute and associated skip scanning of encrypted TG would make it a lot easier to more accurately map the trunked systems.

Also on the wish list would be the displaying of the ALGID and KID. Fortunately there are a couple of programs that decode this information.
