Hello

Attempting to listen to a Simulcast site in my area. I programed it using the Sentinel software. When the scanner stops on the frequency it sounds scrambled. The frequency is not encrypted. I checked settings and nothing is jumping out at me. Any suggestions?

Sounds encrypted to me,

Watch the display to see if "ENC" flashes.

Also, please post a link from the database.

Good luck!
Thanks for the fast reply. I will check and see if the ENC flashes on the screen below is a screenshot of the frequency of the radio reference database. The channel is Piatt county sheriff’s department.

If that is 151.4625 that is P25E, however there is a note "Sheriff is NXDN, not encrypted, using no TG (TG0) and appears to be simulcast across all 3 towers (11/19) *future 151.4675" so, do you have the NXDN upgrade and is it programmed as NXDN to see if that is the issue?

I have the NXDN update installed on my scanner as far as a program is NXDN I’m not sure. I just use a sentinel software to program it figured it would take care of it for.

Sentinel does not automatically figure out the mode, it is programming software that programs what you tell it to program. If you told it P25 it is decoding P25, if you told it NXDN then it will decode the NXDN transmissions.

The database says it’s not encrypted but now I’m starting to think that maybe you guys are right and it is encrypted.

The database, as shown above does show it is (or was as P25 signal) encrypted, the mode column shows P25E, a E means full time encrypted, a "e" means part time encrypted, and just P25 means in the clear.

Should have done more homework on this I guess. When I seen that it said the department was not encrypted I thought I was good. Now seeing the mode shows P25E showing it is encrypted. Very confusing. Lesson learned. Thanks everyone for the help with this.

Don't feel bad. I did the same, I bought BCD996P2, great scanner, but sucks on simulcast. Being pretty green (still am) on the hobby, I really didn't know about simulcast. I ended getting a SDS200, the 996 is used for the airports, some rail and a few other analog site.

My BCD996P2 worked OK on simulcast hooked up to a discone (low gain, not good on 853Khz) then I got the idea to try a high gain directional yagi mounted low to try and choke off the other towers and pointed it at the closest tower. It works great! I did try the yagi mounted up above the roof but could not null out the other towers and had distortion. Might be something to try as the yagi only cost about $30

I'm fine now, having the two scanners. I have a Omni X up about 20' that's hooked up to both scanners. It get from the 160's to the 800's.
