If say we (scanner hobbiest) were asked to design & engineer a brand new hand held scanner model by 1 of the scanner manufactures what would be some of the requirements that we would list? Maybe we can on sell our ideas.I will start by including
1. A LARGE SCREEN!

So your saying, if this ultimate scanner cost as much as an XTS5000 you'd buy one?

Absolutely! Half the members here are already doing that and risking fines, seizures and forfeitures plus jail time to get those features.

If someone designed a scanner that did all the features above, yet had the sensitivity, capabilities (without TX of course) and physical features of an XTS5000-like radio, count me in!

This radio will have to have true dual receiving capability, MMC or SD Slot so you can swap memory channels without the need for a computer on-the-fly, 10 hours of high quality digital recording capability, a frequency counter and digital / analogue Close Call that runs with absolutely no cut out of audio as well as being able to instantly decode CTCSS, DCS and DTMF, I am guessing the dual receive can make no audio cut out possible. The radio will receive MPT1327, Tetra (unencrypted) , you will be able to purchase extension cards to allow extra features beyond what firmware updates can add. The price in the end will probably be about $10'000 or more lmao.

Why do people clutter up what could be a serious thread with ProVoice or encryption crap? If you have nothing to add - don't post...

It must receive DC to light, all modes and all forms of encryption, have a range of 1,000 miles, programmable by sheer thought and have a built in 60" Plasma monitor. (;->)

"Why do people clutter up what could be a serious thread with ProVoice or encryption crap?"

How could what's nonsense to begin somehow turn serious and why should it?

"If you have nothing to add - don't post."

Well, why DID you?

"I got my laugh, I'm outa here!"

A display that is better lite for those of us that are visualy impared.

Include a VERY NICE antenna from ANTENEX.

Other than that, my 396T suites me just fine for my needs.

{By the way, if you haven't tried an antenna from ANTENEX, you don't know what your missing}

There are other threads here on RR which discuss this topic.

The basic things needed are:
- two receivers in order to have true priority
- executable code in FLASH memory and can be updated easily - because existing scanners have lots of bugs and many will be obsolete from rebanding, new trunk freqs, etc.

How about displaying the conventional frequency and alpha tag at the same time??

Oh wait, only the new Unidens don't do that.

A better size, that makes the radio look more like a comm radio, and the ability to have a desk stand.

Maybe a little heavier too to make it more stable, the size and weight of the Kenwood TK-2212 would be excellent (but for our purposes might be too narrow)

1. Battery packs/covers held on securely like a two way w/t.
2. Good strong case that doesn't disintergrate when dropped.
3. At least 500mw of audio with powerful speaker.
4. Backlighted keypad.
5. PL and DPL
6. Two tone sequential page

Price? You can buy an Icom U82 ham walkie talkie for $80.00 that has all but two of the above features. It could be done.
