Listening to this mornings two alarm apartment fire in Euless, I heard something interesting. The dispatcher advised that “DFR” was enroute, which I first thought was strange that Dallas Fire Rescue would be responding to a fire in Euless. She then advised that the building had “flames shooting out of the roof, according to the DFR, looking at the screen”. I believe this actually stands for “Drone First Responder”. This has started to become a trend in fire departments with the funding and resources for it. A drone, usually operated by a dispatcher, would be deployed to a reported fire in order to get eyes on scene before anyone actually gets there. Does anyone know more details about useless Fire having this drone capability?

Pretty common in Texas now. DPS actually hosts a Part 105 zero to pilot class for users to get trained on drones. Very popular for fire as you often see them deployed with thermal cameras so you can spot individuals (SAR applications) and hotspots (wildland).

According to the fire chief of Euless it is a new program they have started doing so the drones can get eyes on an incident prior to arrival. The fire this morning is a great example as there were able to get a second alarm rolling prior to arrival. They did just have a rekindle and they sent the drone to that too.

We are in the very beginning phases of starting a drone program at Crowley. It's interesting to see how other cities are applying it, I beleive we're going a similar direction with it.
