To answer your question, yes it's quite possible in the late fall, winter and part of the spring, when the noise and absorption levels are down.It's probably possible in the summer, too, but not on a regular basis, with T-Storms around. Your radio has to be able to handle the different splits - Europe (and if memory serves, Africa is, too) uses a 9 khz seperation between stations, while we use 10 khz. Very good selectivity, resistance to overload are absolute musts. A great help is a good directional antenna (yes, it can be done with a loop).
I've mentioned these clubs before, but they bear repeating - if you are serious about getting into MW DXing, the International Radio Club of America (IRCA) and National Radio Club(NRC) are 2 very well known MW only clubs based here in the States that specialize in this field.
