Hello. Just ordered a PSR-800 today from Amazon & have a question about an external speaker. I drive a semi & already know that I'll need some kind of external speaker to be able to hear it clearly. I've got a BCT15 in here now & it's got an external speaker hooked to it but a handheld scanner doesn't have enough power to drive it. Will an amplified external speaker be what I'd need? Great forum by the way!

Yes an amplified speaker will def work, I have heard about Motorola ext speaks that have 12v input and are simple to wire but haven't used them. Do you have a stereo in the cab with an aux in?

Yes I do, but if I use my stereo then I won't be able to listen to the radio as long as the scanner is plugged into it.

I would also suggest the amplified Motorola external speaker, they are the best I know of for voice, you can find them on eBay.

I've been tempted on several occasions to purchase an amplified external speaker. Previously, I owned & operated a RS amplified speaker. It worked great. However, there are very few places to mount a Motorola or RS amplified speaker in my small Nissan Versa.

Solution: 3.5 mm, male to male cord from RS extending from GRE PSR 500 earplug jack into axillary port on Kenwood stereo into a JBL amp with over 600 watts& then into JBL speakers. Yes, I can hear it over the road noise.

Just bought an amplified Motorola "old school"' style speaker. It is hooked up correctly and tested (not in the car) and boomed with audio (way louder than the recent Radio Shack - which I had also). Problem with the Motorola is when I plugged it into GRE PSR-800 and gave it power in the car, I got a continuous popping, engine hum, and you name it constant interference. It was completely horrible. Someone suggested a Audio Noise Filter or something similar and I haven't found one to test that out yet.

I bought a small mini amplifier speaker from radio shack Saturday & it works really well! Runs on a 9v battery or you can use a 9v power cord. Have no problem hearing it in my semi. $14

I had that same problem once and it turned out to be the ground. I had a ground loop, moving the ground cured the problem.
