I’m seeing extreme heat buildup around the antenna base on my SDS 100. If I unscrew the antenna, the threads are warm. I’m using a remtronix antenna. The receive quality of the scanner has really gone down.

Define "extreme heat buildup". All SDS100's get warm around the antenna, but it's no where near extreme or enough to do any damage.

I keep my nylon case on all the time but I cut larger vent holes and I leave the belt clip disc on the radio and it pushes out the back of the case to allow air in. As has been said all of the radios get hot in the area of the base of the antenna. It's very noticeable.

There is a safety feature on the radio that if you are charging when the radio is on or even when the radio is not on if the radio gets too hot the light will turn from green to red and it will stop charging.

The only way it will resume charging is to let it cool off.

There's one temp sensor in the scanner and another in the battery. The battery one switch off the charging function and I believe the internal sensor powers off the scanner and cannot be powered on again until it cools down. You will probably need to have the scanner exposed to sunlight to make that internal sensor to trigger.

Wow that's new information to me, having the charging light go red due to charging while running pretty much happens every time now for me after a while, maybe secondary to the case.

Never actually had the radio itself with a charge in it actually not run or provide service due to a heat issue from external sources like a hot car or overheating from charging. I never experienced a bad battery that seems fairly random.

Never had the radio fail to serve me by not turning on.

That wouldn't be good. Glad it's never happened to me.
