I am totally new to scanners. I had entered all the frequency numbers for my area, then entered the Tag numbers/letters. I didn't know what to enter for the SQ.mode or DCS code, or even where to find out what I should enter. Last night I could hear the squelch noise, & this morning I could not get rid of the squelch by adjusting the dial. Now, it scans & I don't have any noise whatsoever. Should I do a factory reset & start all over again? Any help would be appreciated.

Normally you should be able to at least get started with a sq mode of none, and no dcs code as the 1065 will cleanly and quietly squelch them anyway. Unless you are trying to seperate co-channeled users with different pl's / dcs, you may not really need that feature.

What are the frequencies / system you are having trouble with? - this may tell us more like if you are programming a phase II P25 system, which the 1065 can't handle...

But yes, you could do a factory reset, but I have a sneaking suspicion that with more information, you may not have to do that.

If you want to be *absolutely* sure, especially if the scanner is old / used etc, you may want to test the eeprom inside. Like a factory reset, only you enter [5] as step #3 as outlined on p.52 of the 1065 manual.

Also, right here you can get Ontario specific information:

https://forums.radioreference.com/ontario/

That should help you out as well.

I have a new Whistler 1065. I have entered the numbers for the police, ems, & the fire department. Actually an ambulance just went by & it didn't pick up on it.

did you program it manually or use software such as arc500 or win500.

I programmed it manually. Now I know that I have duplicate channels . Would that be a problem? Now I see that I could have downloaded software.. Which is the best software for a Whistler 1065? Should I do a factory reset to wipe off all of the other channels before I download the software?

Duplicates are not really a problem. You'd just be scanning the doubled up talkgroups or conventional channels a little more often than the ones entered only once.

Take a look at this Wiki page, and the links on it:
Getting Started with your GRE/RS Object Oriented Scanner - The RadioReference Wiki

For software choices, see Object Oriented Scanner Software - The RadioReference Wiki
Links to the software packages are on this page.

There are three programs that you can use to program your scanner with software. These are Win500, PSREdit500, and ARC500. All three have 30 day free trial periods, so that you can try the programs to see which you like best. After 30 days, the software will quit functioning unless you purchase a key for it. My personal preference is Win500, with PSREdit 500 close behind. If you look through comments here on RadioReference, you'll see some members have a different preference. You may find that one program 'feels' better to you, maybe it's interface is similar to another program you have used. Any of the three will let you save your current programming, then you can modify it however you desire, and then send the updated programming to the scanner.

Sounds like you have frequencies programmed in, and possibly in different scanlists, but the scanlist that contains them is not active when scanning.

The default scanlist is #1 and is active by default.

So the question is what scanlist did you put your police, fire, and ems frequencies into? Did you change them from the default of the #1 scanlist, and have that scanlist accidentally disabled?

From this distance, we don't know how far you've gone into the scanner without understanding some of the settings, and getting confused. Software won't magically fixed this.

I'd try again - reset the scanner to factory defaults because we don't know what you've done other than entering numbers. :) Duplicates are not a problem, but generally unnecessary until you know that you need a duplicate. For now, you don't.

Reset, then program in your channels, but don't change the scanlist from the default. Ignore it for now. When done, hit scan. If "Nothing enabled!" shows up, hit button 1 to toggle the default scanlist on.

Have you checked in the Ontario subforum to see if your frequency references aren't stale?
