• To anyone looking to acquire commercial radio programming software:

Please do not make requests for copies of radio programming software which is sold (or was sold) by the manufacturer for any monetary value. The same goes for any private transaction via Private Message. Even if you attempt to engage in this activity in PM's we will still enforce the forum rules. Your PM's are not private and the administration has the right to read them if there's a hint to criminal activity.

If you are having trouble legally obtaining software please state so. We do not want any hurt feelings when your vague post is mistaken for a free request. It is YOUR responsibility to properly word your request.

To obtain Motorola software see the Sticky in the Motorola forum.

The various other vendors often permit their dealers to sell the software online (i.e., Kenwood). Please use Google or some other search engine to find a dealer that sells the software. Typically each series or individual radio requires its own software package. Often the Kenwood software is less than $100 so don't be a cheapskate; just purchase it.

For M/A Com/Harris/GE, etc: there are two software packages that program all current and past radios. One package is for conventional programming and the other for trunked programming. The trunked package is in upwards of $2,500. The conventional package is more reasonable though is still several hundred dollars. The benefit is you do not need multiple versions for each radio (unlike Motorola).

Hello davhi8: These antennas will work better than the non ground plane fiberglass sticks and offer way less interference to neighbors TV's and such. But the materials are on the cheap side. And if you have a amp that will do 2400 watts I would not suggest this antenna.

A amp that will do 2400 watts will cost approx. one two dollars a watt, not cheap. Put it at least 20 to 30 feet up if possible. Use good coax like LMR-400

Good Luck

JayMojave,
Thanks for the reply. I am new to this and do not have my FCC so I am only pushing 4 wats. Is 4w enough to power this antenna? It will be aprox 50 ft in the air.

I really don't know dipole from moped... That said, I just want a big antenna that will work with my mobile rig set up as a base. It has been 30 years since I messed with CB's and want to tinker around once again. If it takes, I will spend some $$$ getting my license and a 10 meter rig.

Hello davhi8: Yeah that antenna will work well for you, better than the fiberglass stick that are a non ground plane antenna. 4 Watts will work quit well, especially with that antenna at 50 Ft high.

Its quit impressive when you look at the range equation and see how little the amps help out at times.

My first radio was Gonset G-12 powered by a old car battery, and had a battery charger, with a 102 inch whip antenna on the roof, no ground plane and high SWR but I was able to talk a few miles and had a blast.

Good luck and enjoy

That 'ring' is just an impedance matching device, the same as a coil. Such a device , coil or 'ring', is required for any 5/8 wave antenna, doesn't matter if it has radials or not.

Thanks JM!
I am using my 12 volt solar backup system for power. I can run 12 volts at 100 amps for 48 hours without voltage loss. I should have everything set up within 2 weeks and will post my results. I truly appreciate the advise.
