JEFFERSON COUNTY – A fatal accident Friday morning on Highway 93 has forced authorities to shut down a portion of the highway.

The Colorado State Patrol says the accident, which occurred at about 5:30 a.m. on Highway 93 near Rocky Flats, involved a red 2000 Chevy Tracker and a black 2007 Jeep Grand Cherokee.

Troopers say the Chevy was traveling northbound on Highway 93 when the driver lost control, the car began to rotate counter-clockwise ending up in the southbound lane and was struck by the southbound Jeep.

Both cars went to the west of the roadway after the impact, according to state patrol.

Troopers say the driver of the Tracker was killed. The victim’s name was not immediately released.

The driver of the Jeep Grand Cherokee sustained minor injuries and was transported to a local hospital, according to state patrol.

There was snow on the roadway at the time of the crash.

The highway remains closed between Highway 128 and Highway 72 as troopers investigate the scene.
