Logger killed on Missionary Ridge
A man who was part of a logging party on Missionary Ridge was struck and
killed Wednesday by a tree felled by one of his colleagues, emergency
officials said.
Authorities did not release the victim's name or other personal
information, pending notification of his family.
The victim was breathing despite his injuries but died before rescue
workers could transport him to a hospital, officials said.
"My understanding was the (victim) had just massive amounts of trauma,"
said Dave Imming, a Durango Fire & Rescue Authority spokesman.
The victim was struck by a tree that another individual cut down, said
Investigator Pat Downs of the La Plata County Sheriff's Office.
The incident occurred shortly before 11 a.m. in a remote area of
Missionary Ridge near Forest Service Road 076. It was not in the
Missionary Ridge Fire burn area, Downs said.
The logging crew had a contract with the U.S. Forest Service to remove
trees to make the road safe, Downs said. The logging company was not
identified.
A TriState CareFlight crew was the first on the scene. Officials from
the sheriff's office, fire authority, La Plata County Office of
Emergency Management and La Plata County coroner's office also
participated in the attempted rescue and investigation.
